    I’m using executive theme and have managaed to sort out the highlight when a subpage is selected. I want to get the Menu parent highlighted with active white text and colour background, but also the same to happen with the active subpage but with a ligher colour

    Not sure I understand the second part of your question, but to change the color of the top-level nav item on rollover, you’ll want to change the hex codes in this part of your CSS file:
    .menu-primary li:hover a,
    .menu-primary li a:hover,
    .menu-secondary li a:hover,
    .menu-secondary li:hover a,
    #header .menu li a:hover,
    #header .menu li:hover a {
    background-color: #;
    color: #fff;
    }

    Have you tried using Firebug or Chrome Inspect Element to experiment with changing your CSS values on the fly? It can be really helpful in experimenting with changes without committing them to your live site.
