I’m currently using the epik theme and want to add a recent posts widget to the sidebar that displays a post thumbnail and post title.

What is the best way to do this in functions.php? I don’t want to add plugins if possible, but am not sure how to make this modification.

    Thanks!

Would take a fair amount of custom PHP and CSS to do this. Far easier to use an existing widget.

    Brad,

Within the widgets area, I have an existing recent posts widget. Is this something I can modify – to add the thumbnail to it? If so, in functions.php?

If not, what do you suggest? A plugin?

    Yes, a plugin.

You can modify it or use both PHP and CSS code but its a lot of work which is why i suggest a widget.

    Brad,

Thanks for the help. I ended up using the Genesis Feature Post widget.
