I am a know-nothing when it comes to coding.

I am capable of copying and pasting code into the functions.php

I get this code from nice folks who offer solutions my various desires.

The question is:  What is the best way to do this in such a way that it is easy to find and replace should I upgrade a theme?

Is it ALWAYS ok to put it at the end of the php file? Are there standard formats and ways to keep changes documented?

This is a nagging question I have mostly ignored but figured it is worth the humiliation of asking.

Copy your child theme to your local computer every time you make changes so you have a backup of all your custom coding.
