When I try to make the featured images display at 600×250 they only go to 300 width. I think that is because my other theme resized the featured images to 300×300. Is there a plug in, or some other way to resize these featured images so they can display at the full 600 width?

    Chris Cree

There’s a plugin that I use to resize images when changing themes:

It only shows compatibility up to WordPress 3.2.1 but I’ve had good luck with it at least as far as WP 3.4.2.

Before you run the plugin check your image sizes in Settings –> Media and make sure those settings are what you want them to be.

Also, if you have inserted, say, a “Medium” size image in your posts then they will still be medium after you run through the size change. In that case you may have to manually edit your posts to change out your images to the size you want.

    Thanks Chris.

I’m actually not even sure if that’s what I need (or should) do.

When I go to media settings I notice that the thumbnail size is set to 180×180 and there is a check mark by “crop thumbnail to exact dimensions” – is that what should be there?

Nevermind. I actually used the “regenerate Thumbnails” plug in and that seemed to worked.

I always uncheck that crop-thumbnail box – I’ll decide where to crop my images, thank you very much, I tell the screen as I’m doing that.

I have also discovered that as long as my original image is bigger than the area I’m using it in, I can make the imported image resize on the fly if I remove the width and height from the info in the gobbledygook that shows up in <img src=”imagefile.png” title=”imagetitle” alt=”photo: cute baby”  width=”300px” height=”200px” ohgeez=”whatelsecouldpossiblygoinhere” “and=”why” /> . Okay – those last two things are a joke – but if you get rid of width=”300px” and height=”200px” when you’ve inserted an image into a post, it will size down with the space that post sits in if the browser window gets smaller or the layout changes for some other reason.

Don’t know if I would do that for a featured image that needs to be a thumbnail, but it could be worth experimenting with.

Sharing the good news about the wonders of web typography and the split-step. Either one should get you moving fast. ;-)
