Hi, I’m using the Buddypress Template Pack with the News theme. I’m going through the compatibility steps and following the instructions here: http://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/bp-template-pack-walkthrough-level-easy-2/
It says to edit the page.php or index.php file. Neither of those files exist in the child theme.
I copied page.php from the genesis folder into my news child theme folder but the file doesn’t have the structure they discuss in the tutorial. Can you let me know which file(s) I need to edit please?November 28, 2012 at 10:41 pm #2218
To clarify, you’re not using the GenesisConnect add-on for BuddyPress, right?
I think that tutorial is going to be very hard to follow and then match up to corresponding Genesis components, especially now that the news theme is responsive – that tutorial seems to be covering a basic theme structure.
I would suggest you try using this plugin: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-template-pack/
Having done this before, and given up entirely – even with the genesis connect – I don’t necessarily guarantee that’s an easy resolution, but I do think it will get you further than you would if you followed the tutorial.
I have mixed results with the BP forums but they would definitely help with any third party theme, and Genesis is obviously popular.
(I guess what I’m trying to say above all else is to keep looking around there are more resources that will help you further along.)November 28, 2012 at 10:47 pm #2220
Thanks for the great info Rob. I too have used the Genesis connect plugin but the results don’t seem to translate well with the themes. I’ll take a look at bp-template-pack and see what I can hash out. I’ll try to post back if I find a worthwhile solution.November 28, 2012 at 11:02 pm #2225
Rob I just realized that I am using this plugin http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-template-pack/ and I’m not using Genesis Connect. The BP-Template-pack just seems to ‘look’ better and incorporate the Buddypress features better… I just need to figure out which files I need to customize.November 28, 2012 at 11:23 pm #2228
That plugin doesn’t give you instructions? Yeah the template pack didn’t work for me either, I was told it wasn’t recoded for the new version of the theme, and I ended up purchasing BuddyBoss – it’s actually really nice but not responsive, and I have a lot of iPad and iPhone users for that installation.November 28, 2012 at 11:23 pm #2229
I mean the plugin itself, from within the dashboard….? Maybe there’s a readme file? Something?? oy.November 28, 2012 at 11:36 pm #2230
I just looked through all of the genesis files and it wasn’t at all obvious to me where in the world you would edit those files because everything says genesis()
But “customizations” are now forum activities that won’t be answered by support……. great! No documentation, broken software, and I have access to less information because everything in a ticket won’t be viewable for me to save time and trouble… Just awesome. Why are we using Genesis?November 29, 2012 at 1:11 am #2233
Thanks Rob. Yeah it gives instructions but it says to edit the page.php file. This file isn’t in the child theme, it is in the genesis folder. BUT as you said, the file doesn’t have the structure that they say to edit so I’m stuck. It looks like the majority of the information is stored in the child theme xml file: child-theme/xml/child-theme.xml but I have no idea what to edit nor where to look for help.
