Change color of drop down menus

Am using the Back Country theme. Trying to change the color of the drop down menus in the subnav bar. Want to go from black to gray for the background. Used firebug to locate the code below but changes I make to the code do not show on the site.

#subnav li li a,
#subnav li li a:link,
#subnav li li a:visited {
background: none;
border-bottom: 1px solid #333;
color: #777;

Also tried making changes to the #nav li li a, #nav li li a:link, #nav li li a:visited code with no positive result. So, it would seem I’m off base when it comes to making this simple change. Would appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction.

The background for the dropdowns actually comes from this css:

#subnav li ul {
background: #222222;
height: auto;
left: -9999px;
padding: 0 10px;
position: absolute;
width: 140px;
z-index: 9999;
}

Thank you, worked like a charm! Now to figure out how to change font color and the color of that darn black bar.
