I had my site analyzed by Yoast. He recommended that I create my own 404 error page. But when I look at the Genesis 404.php template it says:
WARNING: This file is part of the core Genesis framework. DO NOT edit
this file under any circumstances. Please do all modifications
in the form of a child theme.
Does this mean I should create a 404.php in the child theme?
Yup, you read that warning because you’re trying to edit the CORE file.
It’s always BAD to edit the Genesis file, since it’ll be overwritten when you update it in the future.
Any customization should go in your child theme files.
Well, seems you’re using a child theme. Great.
To customize the 404 page, you can copy the code from the Genesis and paste it into a new blank file, rename it 404.php and upload to your child theme folder.
Want a simpler solution?
Use Genesis 404 Page plugin.
many thanks — I understand and will give the section option a try. If that doesn’t work, I’ll try the second.
I am using the Enterprise Pro theme.
I modified the 404.php page wording which was easy because I simply added a couple of words.
I love the look of the default 404 page but have no PHP skillls to change it to my liking.
All I want to do is a add a small image to the page from my WP library.
I was hoping it was as simple as adding html code but the html code was ignored.
Is this an easy modification for me or do I need PHP skills to make this change?
