I happened across this tutorial about customizing the Responsive slider to use a custom post type with custom fields.

By default, it appears that the slider displays the slide-excerpt div and then the slide-image div. I’m looking for a way to switch those two. I don’t want to edit the genesis-responsive-slider.php file, as I might lose changes if that plugin gets updated.

Is there a way to replace that file with an updated version without risking losing the change?

I’m not sure, but you could leave a comment on the tutorial, and see if Nick will weigh in.
