Forgive my noobness. For the most part, I’ve managed to set up my site like the demo of the Balance Theme (I imported the demo content to work with). However, on the home page, for the featured post, how can I get an image to be grabbed from the middle of the post and shown as the featured image above the excerpt on the home page? It does that automatically for the non-featured posts in the grid below on the home page, but not for the featured post.
Also, how can I alter how many posts show on the front page? In home.php it seems to say that only 5 should show but it’s showing the featured post plus 9 others. I’d prefer this to be the featured post plus 4 or 6 instead.
Any help would be appreciated!

Re: featured posts, are you asking how you can avoid having to designate a post as a Featured Post and just have it automagically pull one for you and insert it? I’m sure that is possible to do, but I’m wondering why you wouldn’t just use the existing Featured Post capabilities in the post editor (down on the right-hand side, under the categories and tags) to specify the Featured Post.
I believe that for altering the number of posts you also need to go into Genesis >Theme Settings and scroll down to “Blog pages display…” and do the same thing on Settings >Reading. I think the one in Genesis > Theme Settings doesn’t actually apply to the home page but the one in Settings>Reading does, but I’m not positive. Try that, though.

Thanks Dorian, the reading setting that you pointed me to did indeed update the home page so as to only reflect 7 total posts, exactly as I had been looking to do.
As far as the featured post goes, I didn’t articulate well what it is I mean. It is the latest post which gets featured, and I like that; I’m not looking to change that.
What I am having difficulty understanding is how to get the latest post to have an image pulled from within it automatically and displayed as the featured image, above the excerpt that shows on the front page. The non-featured posts below it on the home page do this automatically. For example, the post titled “Another test post to see layout” has an image in the middle of the post, but on the homepage the image has been pulled and is displayed above the excerpt of the post. I’d like for this to also happen for the latest post, but that doesn’t happen.
If that makes sense… ?January 26, 2013 at 3:49 pm #15113
My first answer made no sense because I was saying “post” instead of “image.” And…this next answer may be totally unhelpful.
What I meant to say was this: if you designate a featured IMAGE for a post, it will show up as the featured image up in the top section and in the grid below. Once a post gets bumped down to the non-featured posts grid section, it will automatically go and find an image to feature, I think, even if you didn’t set a Featured Image when you were composing the post. When a post first goes up and it’s in the Featured Post section, I don’t think it will automatically do that (the finding an image to feature if you didn’t specify one), but if you manually set the featured image, you will get your desired result – I think.

As far as just selecting “featured image” in the featured post itself, I tried that to no avail. The image still would not display.
But I did find the fix… Or, almost, anyways.
I was messing around in home.php and the “feature_image_size” was set to “0”. I plugged in ‘grid’ and sure enough the feature image shows up for the feature post, but in the grid size (as expected). Now I need help figuring out how to make the image size proportionally bigger, but maintaining a rectangle like the grid images so it looks consistent.
Not sure what language I need to put in there for that to happen…January 26, 2013 at 5:56 pm #15197
Figured it out! Very proud cuz this is all new to me.
Went into functions.php, added image size as follows:
add_image_size( ‘featured’ , 600, 200, TRUE );
Went into home.php and adjusted feature_image_size from ‘0’ to ‘featured'; reuploaded the image, and voila! Mission accomplished.January 26, 2013 at 6:55 pm #15215
Aha! Oh, I should have thought of that. I have encountered that exact same issue. Very glad you worked it out! Bonus points if you managed to edit functions.php without getting the White Screen of Death.
