Hi there,
I'm new to this forum and I'm considering implementing the Genesis Framework (and a Child Theme, with customization) as opposed to a non-Genesis Premium Theme (and Child Theme customization) and I'm hoping someone can shed some light on a question I have.
As I understand it, when I customize a non-Genesis Premium Theme using a Child Theme, I'm not affecting the core files of the Premium Parent Theme, and in the event of a Parent Theme update, it won't affect any modifications I made in the Child Theme. In other words, I can modify/extend the the Parent Theme via the Child Theme, and if the Parent Theme is updated, the Child Theme won't be affected.
Additionally, as I understand it, this is also how it works with the Genesis Framework (which is the Parent Theme) in that I can install a Child Theme (and modify it), and in the event of a Genesis update, it won't affect my Child Theme (and modifications.)
However, my question is: if I purchase and install a Child Theme under Genesis (i.e. one of the Child Themes from Studio Press), and I want to modify that Child Theme, what happens if the Child Theme developer releases an update to the Child Theme I purchased? If I install the update, wouldn't I lose all the modifications I made to the Child Theme? And doesn't this then defeat the purpose of having a Child Theme (although I realize I still have all the benefits of having the Genesis Framework/Parent Theme installed.)
Perhaps another way to word the question is: Do Genesis Child Themes typically get updated, similar to how non-Genesis Premium Themes do (i.e. Theme Forest Themes)? And if so, how does that affect any customizations I make to the Genesis Child Theme? i.e. wouldn't I lose my customizations to the Genesis Child Theme if I install an update to that Child Theme.
Perhaps I'm missing something basic and straightforward, but I'm finding this puzzling and I'm hoping someone may be able to point out what I'm missing or misunderstanding.
And again, I understand the benefit of the Genesis Framework/Child Theme (security, SEO, etc.) I'm wondering specifically about modifying a Genesis Child Theme that I'm thinking of purchasing, and what happens to those modifications if the Child Theme developer releases an update to the Genesis Child theme.
Thanks in advance,

Thank you SO much! One of the answers in that thread was very insightful.
And I'm happy to find out that I wasn't the only one curious about this issue. 🙂
