I am evaluating the (in)SPYR theme for a new web site. This is the first time I have used 1) Genesis or 2) this child theme.
I chose this theme (inSPYR) because I liked the way the demos looked and I figured that I could mold my content to take advantage of the theme.
The basic problem I'm having with this concept is that capabilities that I would have thought were theme control panel options are actually only available by modifying the theme source code. Everything I'd want to be available as an option, even down to font selections, is only available by overriding the CSS or PHP.
Here is an example. I like the look of inSPYR's footer area:
How the heck do I get specific control over all of the stuff inside this footer? I don't like the way any of it is set up.
For one thing, I really don't want to use the site title as a centered piece of h1 size text inside the footer area.
And I want way different fields than are what are shown in this screen shot inside the footer (like company name, address, copyright notice, my own icons, etc.) There's not one thing text wise that I want that is shown in this screen shot.
In another theme I used in the past, the footer area was controlled by a footer widget and I just tweaked the HTML and CSS inside that widget. No coding/overrides of child themes necessary.
I am also aware of the hook to add footer widgets to any Genesis theme. When I use this hook in my theme, the "footer" widget stacks up with a grey background on top of the red footer whose design I like. It's not giving me control over "the" footer that I want in my design.
I am running into similar brain locks with other aspects of the stock site design. It looks really pretty and I can't use a darned bit of it, if I understand the threads and posts I am reading here.
I'm quite technical and geek and I am not afraid of code. But still, it seems like virtually anything I need to do with this theme I need to research and write override code, which is really, really not what I was looking for with a purchased theme.
I'm thinking, if I have to work this hard at realizing the design I want with a paid template, I should start with one of the free WordPress themes like Twenty Twelve and style it myself.

Sorry you're having a hard time! I think (in)SPYR is very difficult to use personally - it's not indicative of all Genesis child themes for sure. I haven't used it in awhile but I believe there is a tutorial on changing the footer under the (in)SPYR section of your dashboard. I hope that helps, but if you don't find what you need, let us know and we'll keep looking.
