I JUST started a food blog. I'm currently trying to decide on a theme, and I'm down to the following themes: Minimum , Runway, and Metro. What I want from my theme:
I don't really know which of these themes would best meet my criteria, so if somebody with more experience in this area could help me, I would be ecstatic. Also, what are theme options? Each theme says it has theme options, but what exactly are these?
I like the Metro theme, because I think it meets all the criteria you are looking for.
By theme options, it could mean such things as:
- color choices
- layout choices (one sidebar, two sidebars, full width)
- Portfolio Page etc.
Different themes have different options...
I have used News Theme successfully. I believe it meets your criteria:
clean, simple, pretty minimal
ability to opt out of a huge featured image
social media widgets towards the top of the page (use simple social icon, My Pinterest Badge and other cool widgets to accessorize the sidebar.
To publish my recipes I use kitchen monki: http://www.kitchenmonki.com. They are super-good folk to work with.

Good luck to you

I also think the Metro theme is a good choice.....
To speed up the process please post the link to the website in question.
