(Am posting this question here as I first posted in design but think it was the wrong place)
Hi any help would be great.
Have downloaded the book-cover.psd file in order to customise book covers and can’t see what I’m supposed to do with the file?
Am I correct in thinking it requires photoshop to work or can I upload it it Gimp and if so where?May 22, 2015 at 12:46 pm #153300MoodyRivieraMemberYes, it's a Photoshop file. But you don't necessarily need Photoshop to be able to use the file. You can use Photoshop or Gimp or probably several other image-editing applications that support layered Photoshop files.
When you get the file open you'll notice that the file consists of a background layer, a layer containing an image of some sample book-cover art, and two layers containing text.
The idea is that StudioPress is giving you a head start with this image, which is correctly sized for you to use for your own book cover, customized with your own art work and text...that will appear on a page on your site, similar to this page:
http://demo.studiopress.com/author/book/iceland-eats/Of course you don't *have* to use this provided file...you can always create your own book cover file, but using the provided file should make things a bit easier for you.
Here's a link that describes some applications that should help you open the .PSD file if you don't have Photoshop:

May 23, 2015 at 10:09 am #153410PurpleTreeMemberHi
Thanks for the reply but it's still not working for me.
I downloaded the zip file and extracted on my desk top but didn't see the files you mentioned. Then I uploaded them to the script part of Gimp but when I started and checked gimp nothing seems to be there?Anyone else used this or have an idea as to what I'm doing wrong?
Any help much appreciated
May 23, 2015 at 10:41 am #153413MoodyRivieraMemberBefore I wrote that reply to you, I had downloaded that Zip file, and the book-cover.psd file was definitely in there.
Then I opened the book-cover.psd file in Photoshop, and all the layers I described were definitely in the file.
I haven't used Gimp, so I don't have any idea what you mean when you say you "uploaded them to the script part of Gimp"...that doesn't make any sense to me. Maybe it will make sense to someone else though.
Here's a YouTube video where someone shows how to open a Photoshop file in Gimp...maybe this will help:
But since you say that you "downloaded and extracted the zip file on your desktop" but didn't see the book-cover.psd file there...I don't know...that's not going to help much until you extract the book-cover.psd file from the Zip file...which should be a simple and straightforward process.
Here's my e-mail address if you would like to contact me directly...then I would be happy to send you the layered Photoshop back to your e-mail, and maybe that will help you get over this hump.

May 23, 2015 at 10:49 am #153417PurpleTreeMemberOK I uploaded paint.net and have successfully seen what it is about. I thought it was something different so completely my own fault. Thank you to everyone who helped me 🙂

I didn't see your reply until I sent the one above. It was me trying to get Gimp to do something it didn't want to do. I actually thought it was going to give the book effect (with the spine) as shown in the site demo. I realise now that it is actually helping configure the design of the book cover. (Which I've already done/am doing)
Completely my own misunderstanding but thank you so much for your time and patience 🙂
