    Hello outrageously fantastic person checking out my post!

    First time posting here, looking to get stuck into modifying the Genesis theme.

    I would like to display on the homepage of my site 3 widget areas, just like you have in the footer on the stock genesis child theme (I’m using the 2.0 beta). No posts or sidebars, just the 3 widget columns.

    I’m ok with html & css, however php is something I only delve into when following a tutorial… so not quite sure how I might go about this — I was thinking it may be possible to simply duplicate the footer & make it function as the content area? Am I on the right track?

    If you could point me in the right track, I would be most grateful. Thanks!

    Hi James,

    Firstly “Hello outrageously fantastic person checking out my post!” haha :) and welcome.

    One way is to add this to your child themes functions.php

    /*
    if you want to add widgets to your footer, you can use this function
    */
    add_theme_support( 'genesis-footer-widgets', 3 );

    (if you do need more or less widgets just change the number from “3″ to however many you wish)

    then all you need to do is style them.

    Hope this helps

    Hi Stewart, or should I say champion? :P

    Thanks for your reply. To clarify, what I’m after is to have 3 widget areas in the main content area (static homepage), instead of in the footer.

    What do you think, is there an easy way to implement this? Thanks :)

    Works a treat. I’ve also learned a lesson in php — “?>” needs to be at the end of the file, not after the credits at the beginning… awesome. Thanks again Stewart, it’s a beautiful thing to ask a question & get such a helpful response.

    Stewart, is there an easy way to have these custom widgets match the sidebar widgets styling?

    Thanks!
