I'm looking to be able to set the thumbnail image on my blog and also on category pages.
I was thinking to be able to use a custom field such as thumbnail and in the value field, to be able to include a hyperlink directly to the image when I am editing a post.
I'm using the Delicious theme right now. Considering switching to Executive.
Here's what I tried to enter, but it did not show up.
Custom field ex:
thumbnailValue:

Is this the best approach or is there a better way to do this?
Thanks for your help.

June 1, 2013 at 5:36 pm #43538ckarasiewiczMemberI realize the featured image adds the thumbnail.
On the Delicious theme, the featured thumbnail adds that image to the homepage slider and then generated a thumbnail for say a category page. What I'm looking to do I guess is upload a featured image, which will add an image to the homepage slider (that's sized properly for that).
Then, what I want to be able to do is specify a specific thumbnail that essentially overwrites the one the featured image generates - the featured image in the Delicious theme is a rectangle. On my category page, I use a square.
Here's an example of the image on the homepage now:

http://www.christiankonline.com/blogNotice how the featured image for the post is different from the thumbnail? I achieved this by uploading the thumbnail image first. How do you update this for posts that have already been published? I've already tried to regenerate thumbnails, clear my cache, etc.
Basically, I want to figure out how to go back and update old posts that don't have a nice thumbnail with them.
June 1, 2013 at 6:08 pm #43541AnitaKeymasterAre you using any caching plugins? You may have to deactivate them. Also, if you have a setting in there called Minify, you need to deactivate that, then regenerate the thumbnails.

June 1, 2013 at 6:25 pm #43544AnitaKeymasterI am still not getting what you are trying to do. You can change the images on the blog by going to Genesis Theme Settings, scroll down to Content Archives and select an image size from there. If you don't see the size you want, you can create a new size by going to Appearance > Editor. Click Functions.php on the right.
Look for:
// Add new image sizes
You can copy/paste one of the images to a new line. Set the height and width of and give it your own name. Save it.
Then go back to the Content Archives and select the new size you created for the Blog page. Is this what you are trying to do?

June 1, 2013 at 6:38 pm #43548ckarasiewiczMemberAnita, here's what I am looking to do.
On all of those posts listed on the podcasts category page, is there a way to override the thumbnail and specify a different one on each post?
Right now, when I add a featured image, this image gets used as the thumbnail. I want to be able to add a featured image like I normally would and then for the thumbnail, be able to specify something different.
Here's an example of an older post that I did that I want to go back and change the thumbnail on.
Sample post:

June 2, 2013 at 7:02 am #43597Brad DaltonParticipantHere's one solution which may help http://www.wpbeginner.com/plugins/how-to-add-multiple-post-thumbnails-featured-images-in-wordpress/
Another way is to create a custom function and connect it to a custom field with a custom meta box on all edit post screens.
This will give you a new featured image module below your editor so you end up with 2 but they display different sized images in different theme locations.
You can then add support for another custom sized featured image to your child themes functions.php file. Then you can regenerate post thumbnails or manually add another image.
Both these methods pretty much do the same thing but are packed differently.
The only challenging part here is the coding of the custom function if you don't understand PHP.
