What is the best and most time efficient method for optimizing photos for your WordPress blog? Is there a plugin or program that one may use to achieve this? And what would have the most beneficial impact a plugin or use of software such as Photoshop or Lightroom . etc

What is the recommended size for photos?

Many thanks for your kind assistance.

Photos should only be as large as you need them to be. Anything larger is a waste of bandwidth. And resolution over 72px is a waste as well. And you can run the files through smush.it

smush.it rarely works for me.  I choose to use the google page speed add-on for fire bug.  When you run the page speed, it suggests which images can be optimized, and even provides a download of the optimized image.  Then all you have to do is save the optimized image, upload it and replace the original and wala – images are optimized.  Another cool thing you can do to easily combine images into sprites is use something called SpriteMe.  You add it to your bookmarks and then whatever page you want images combined into sprite’s, you just go to your bookmarks, run the tool and creates the css and sprite images for you.  Then for an added bonus, run the sprite image through page speed’s image optimization, download the optimized sprite and you will save a lot of bandwidth and increase your page speeds quite a bit.

    Hope that helps!
