I’m having issues as well with my appearance>widgets area. I can’t open ANY of the widget areas. I also see a red X icon directly beside the “Genesis” on the lefthand side of my admin.

I have found MY problem and it was the “Widget Logic Visual” plugin. I first tried a few different themes and that didn’t help, so I moved on to the plugins – turned them all off and then back on one at a time, checked the widget area and found that one plugin to be MY problem. I’m using the Innov8tive theme and all is working well now.
I realize all of us probably have different plugins installed, so my suggestion is to check those first!

It’s interesting, if I create a child theme with the regular wordpress framework, I can update the theme in the backend using their editor.
However, if I try to update a Genesis child theme, I can’t. This is a clean install… no plugins.

Some plugins that are doing some funky stuff with jquery are causing problems. As far as the theme editor, I just tested on a development install, and the theme editor is working fine for me. Though, I consider it a blessing when the admin editor is disabled. It really plays havoc with even css files sometimes.
Update: tested on a second dev install and I can edit css files there as well. Make sure you don’t have a line in your wp-config file that disables it.December 13, 2012 at 11:15 pm #5170
WP 3.5 isn’t allowing me to do any edits for pages or posts. Turned off all plug-ins and switched themes. Nothing. Content screens are all blank. Widgets will not expand so I can even look at them. What to do?December 14, 2012 at 8:04 am #5204
Make sure you clear your browser cache after turning off plugins as well. Since these problems sound like problems others are having generally, you may want to search over at the WordPress.org forums.

Posting “me too” doesn’t provide enough information for anyone to help. If your problem is different than the initial css editor problem, I suggest opening a new thread for your question. Of note, other than the css editor problem, each of the other problems has been identified by others as a plugin problem elsewhere, in some cases even if the plugin was deleted. Again, please check the links above to see if there is anything specific to your issues.

One thing that will help Genesis users with upgrades to new versions is to keep a local version of the live site on your computer. For Mac users, MAMP gives you a completely free local copy of your live site. Use it to check out new versions of plugins, CSS tweaks, themes, and upgrades to WP and Genesis. Once it all works on your local copy of the site, backup the live site, and implement the changes. Windows users can install WAMP, which does much the same thing.

Thanks to Jen Bauman’s reminder to pay particular attention if you’ve ever used BulletProof Security! I was unable to see content, posts and pages and the widget menu was busted among other things. I still had the HTACCESS file on the server. Deleted it and life is good again! Also check that master list on WordPress from Jen’s link.
