Is there a theme that will allow me to create a look similar to this site: http://michaelhyatt.com/ ?
I'm specifically wanting there to be categories up top with boxes around them like you see on this them.
Thanks.
February 6, 2014 at 11:43 am #88966nutsandboltsMemberYou can do that with most any Genesis child theme - just a matter of using hooks to move one of your nav menus down. I did something similar on this site awhile back using the Genesis Sample theme.

Is there any chance you could help me do something like that on the site I'm working on ?
Brian Gardner suggested I start with the Winter Song theme as a staring point.
February 6, 2014 at 1:32 pm #88986rick4himMember@nutsandbolts - however that site looks very close to what I'm wanting to create. Did you start with a theme when you were doing that?
February 6, 2014 at 1:37 pm #88988nutsandboltsMemberIt was built on Genesis Sample. The secondary navigation was repositioned using this function:
//* Move secondary navigation before loop remove_action( 'genesis_after_header', 'genesis_do_subnav' ); add_action( 'genesis_before_loop', 'genesis_do_subnav' );
That puts it right above the content. Then I used CSS to style it - you can use a tool like Firebug or Inspector to find the CSS and adapt it for your site, or to find the things you want to change on your own. Here's a tutorial: http://www.nutsandboltsmedia.com/how-to-customize-your-genesis-child-theme-with-chromes-inspector/

I think I may be adding your code to the wrong place. I'm adding it to the hook found in the Genesis settings. Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong?
February 6, 2014 at 2:39 pm #89003nutsandboltsMemberOkay, wait. I'm confused. It needs to go in functions.php - right now I'm seeing the code at the very top of your site.

It looks like I had it in the wrong place. How can I get the boxes around the category links, and any ideas how to move that top menu above the logo?
Thanks!
February 6, 2014 at 2:51 pm #89010nutsandboltsMemberSee the tutorial link I posted above - that walks you through how to find the CSS you want to change.
For the top menu, you can reposition it using this (add to functions.php as well):
//* Reposition the primary navigation menu remove_action( 'genesis_after_header', 'genesis_do_nav' ); add_action( 'genesis_before_header', 'genesis_do_nav' );

On a side note, do you see any quick wins / suggestions I can do to clean up the site we have about our son who was born with Down syndrome: http://noahsdad.com
February 6, 2014 at 2:56 pm #89012rick4himMemberBy the way, I checked out the tutorial, but it doesn't mention anything about how to add boxes to a menu item. Am I missing something?
February 6, 2014 at 2:56 pm #89013nutsandboltsMemberOh, he is ADORABLE! And so is the site! I think it looks fantastic.

Any suggestions to tighten things up? It looks like some of the different categories areas / pagenation , and some of that stuff could be tightened up. Any thoughts?
February 6, 2014 at 2:58 pm #89015nutsandboltsMemberThe tutorial is showing you how to inspect the elements on the site so you can add CSS rules to your stylesheet. It's beyond the scope of forum support to provide you with a customized theme; you'd need to hire a designer or developer.

I provide development and training services for designers • Find me on Twitter and Google+February 6, 2014 at 2:59 pm #89017rick4himMemberThanks! I'm not looking for a customized them, I'm looking for help in getting the "buttons" to appear around the category items.
February 6, 2014 at 3:01 pm #89018nutsandboltsMemberI understand that, but it's a matter of adding CSS to the menu items. Providing the exact CSS goes beyond the scope of what we typically do in the forum. You are welcome to open a new topic to ask that question in case another forum member is willing to help out, though.
