The Lifestyle Theme home page default layout is a right sidebar with a “Home” section at the top of the content area and and “Home Left” and “Home Right” below.  Of course you can add widgets in these section but the site owner doesn’t want that.  What I would like to do not have a full page layout with no sidebar and use the featured page widget across the top and then add a text widget where I can add my front-end code below it.

I am not a php developer except what I absolutely have to know to lay down front end html/css/jquery, etc on top of it so I need some help.

    Thanks!

Try the Genesis Layout Extras plugin.

And there’s some code for adding widgets here

    Brad,

I have it laid out the way I want.  I just can’t seem to get the featured page widget to increase in size.  The only place I have found that mentions the image size at all (in the functions file “Add new image sizes”) only affects what the dropdown says when you choose the size you want and not the actual image size itself.

Can you point me in the right direction?

There’s many different ways you can do this:

Remove the sidebar from the home page.

Force full width layout on the home page.

Custom code a new template for the home page.

Use a static page for the home page and add 2 new widgets.

You only want 2 widgets areas full width on the home page with NO sidebar?

Do you want posts after the widgets area’s?

If you don’t want the left and right widgets or posts on the home page then its easy to use a page as your home page.

Create a new page and select it for use on your home page under Reading settings.

Then you can easily hook in 2 new widget areas. Code is here https://gist.github.com/braddalton

You can select the full page layout under the layout settings.

Where exactly do you want the widget areas on the home page? Which hook locations? http://genesistutorials.com/visual-hook-guide/

I actually have it laid out the way I want it.   And the fix was simple.  What you originally told me was correct.  Then once I changed the image size in the functions all I needed to do is delete the image that was already there and then upload the image again.  This time WP created the image the size I needed.

It was just one of those bang your forehead and go “Duh!” moments.

Thanks for your help, you’ve been great.
