I am working on a site created by someone else. It uses the Education theme and the footer widget areas are not visible when clicking Appearance > Widgets. What could be wrong?
December 6, 2013 at 2:24 pm #77424nutsandboltsMemberDoes functions.php still have the function for the footer widgets? You should see this about 6-7 functions down:
/** Add support for 3-column footer widgets */ add_theme_support( 'genesis-footer-widgets', 3 );

// Customize the footer section
add_filter('genesis_footer_creds_text', 'education_footer_creds_text');
function education_footer_creds_text($creds) {
$creds = __('Copyright', 'genesis') . ' [footer_copyright] [footer_childtheme_link] '. __('on', 'education') .' [footer_genesis_link] · [footer_wordpress_link] · [footer_loginout]';
return $creds;
}December 6, 2013 at 4:12 pm #77450nutsandboltsMemberOkay, the function you listed is for the footer credits, which display under the footer widgets. Try pasting in that function I gave you and see if the widget areas come back.

So I will try replacing the code above with the one you pasted and see what happens.
December 6, 2013 at 4:15 pm #77454nutsandboltsMemberNo, don't replace it! That will give you footer widget areas instead of changing the footer credits. What do you need them to say? I'll alter the existing function for you so you can replace it.

Okay, I won't replace but will just add.
Question, how would I access and edit the actual text in the footer credits?
December 6, 2013 at 4:17 pm #77457nutsandboltsMemberOkay, remove the function you pasted in. Don't worry about the one I gave you. Then install the Genesis Custom Footer plugin (I'm a little biased because it's mine) and you can put in your footer text directly in the Genesis theme settings.

I provide development and training services for designers • Find me on Twitter and Google+December 6, 2013 at 4:18 pm #77459fieldmouseMemberI need it to say "Copyright (c) 2013 Name of site"
Right now it says "Copyright (c) 2013 Name of site - Name of Developer"
(With the developer name hyperlinked.)December 6, 2013 at 4:20 pm #77461fieldmouseMemberWell, actually that's "“Copyright (c) 2013 Name of site – Site Design Name of Developer” with 'site design name of developer hyperlinked' to developer site.
December 6, 2013 at 4:20 pm #77462nutsandboltsMemberI think our replies are definitely crossing. Before you install the plugin I mentioned above, look to see if you have Simple Edits under Genesis in your menu. If so, that's where you'll need to change the footer text.

Sorry about all the replies going simultaneously with yours.
Thanks for all your help!December 6, 2013 at 4:23 pm #77464fieldmouseMemberSimple edits. Checking.
December 6, 2013 at 4:25 pm #77465fieldmouseMemberYes, I do have that. Here's what's there:
Footer Credits Text: Copyright [footer_copyright] [footer_childtheme_link] · [footer_genesis_link] [footer_studiopress_link] · [footer_wordpress_link] · [footer_loginout]
Footer Output: <div class="gototop"><p>[footer_backtotop]</p></div><div class="creds"><p>Copyright [footer_copyright] [footer_childtheme_link] · [footer_genesis_link] [footer_studiopress_link] · [footer_wordpress_link] · [footer_loginout]</p></div>
December 6, 2013 at 4:27 pm #77466nutsandboltsMemberOkay, that's really strange. Both the function in functions.php and Simple Edits have the standard Genesis footer credits, so the custom one isn't in either of those places. Can you post a link to the site so I can take a look? Also, can you post the entire functions.php?

December 6, 2013 at 4:31 pm #77471nutsandboltsMemberFeel free to email me directly ([email protected]) if you don't want to publish it where the world can see it. It's difficult to know what's going on without being able to see the site.

Thank you once again, Andrea!
