Does it cause a problem if you rename a theme before you upload it?  Or do you guys just normally use the theme name?

You can rename a theme before or after you upload it but not while it is the active theme. That breaks things. Changing the folder name does not rename the theme. You have to edit the style.css file and change the name there. Do not ever change the “template: genesis” line. That must be left exactly like it is or things break.

So just renaming it in the CSS file will change the name when you view source?  And it will not cause anything to break.

Editing the style sheet and changing the name of the theme at the top will change the name when you are selecting the theme. You can change the folder name if you would like. You should not do this for the active theme while it is active. Things break when you do that.
