I have a strange situation, and I've tested out undoing all the recent updates I can recall, but I haven't figured it out yet, and was wondering if anyone here has also experienced this.
On sliceofscifi.com, we've been embedding YouTube videos and the occasional Tweets all year, ever since I updated to Metro back in February or March, and they were working fine. The only time a URL was displayed instead of a video was when the video had been removed.
Sometime in the past month, all YouTube embeds stopped working. All new ones, that is. Posting any URL save for the embed code just doesn't work, but going back to older posts that contain videos embedded in the same fashion still work, displaying the video and playing them just fine.
I just haven't been able to figure out why a post with a YouTube URL posted in May works, when a new post with a YouTube URL posted in the past week or so doesn't, unless we use the full embed code.
I turned off the one plugin I'd added, Floating Social Bar, and downgraded WPMU's Comments Plus to a previous version, the only changes I'd made in the past month, and neither of those affected the YT embeds, old or new. I'm almost wondering if something changed on the server, but that only makes sense if all the YouTube embeds stopped working, which they haven't.
Anyone else have an idea what this might be, or seen this behavior before? Oh, still running Genesis 1.9.2 there.

And WordPress by default does do rich media embeds using just the URL without Jetpack, has done so since about WP 3.2, I think. I have it working that way on at least a dozen other sites, none of which have ever had Jetpack.
And it looks like this might be an issue on that particular server, since they've noticed it happening on other sites, so we'll see.

It wasn't until they added Twitter and then SoundCloud and I upgraded to a child theme that could handle them that I started seriously playing with the feature.
I also found a snippet that allows people to use oembed in comments, sort of a local way to let people "reply" with videos just like they do on YouTube.
