Hi I want to set up a website design business producing wordpress websites.  I have selected a hosting comany, where I open individual accounts for my clients (in their name and creadit card details).  I wonder if someone can suggest what is the best way to set up the develppment process in terms of website hosting.  Some of my clients already have non wordpress live websites running with the same hosting company and obviously using their domain names.  So I can’t do development on their live server.  I was thinking of getting a hosting space for my development and testing, where I can produce the websites and then move them accross once the client is happy with them. I was however concerned about how hard it will be to move a wordpress website from one server to another while changing domain name urls at the same time. I had a look at http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress but got a bit overwhelemd and confused by so much information and don’t know which instructions option to choose.  If there are any experienced small website business operators, your help with this would be greatly appreciated!

If moving WordPress around gets you a bit overwhelmed than that’s the first part I would start working on to improve. No matter which way you look at it you’re going to be doing that a lot if you want to take this WordPress development thing seriously ;)

Are you working locally as well? I mean, do you have a server environment setup on your local machine as well?

Hi, thank you for replying, you are absolutely right, i do need to work on this as well as a few other things to do with wordpress! I have only just taken it up, I’ve coded my websites in html and css etc before, I guess the only good software is software you know how to use!  I am keen to learne everything about it and most of the time having a great support network like here is essential! :)

Anyways, I do not have a server running on my windows xp. I have developed a website straight on the live server before and it is a bit slow (depending on your connection.  Could you point me in the right sirection as to how to be able to develop wordpress on my computer please, considering I don’t know much about pc servers.

    Thank You

Well, upgrading to Windows 7 or 8 is a must IMHO. But a tool like DesktopServer ought to work on XP http://serverpress.com/downloads/

An option might be to install XAMPP, or WAMPP as it will be in the Windows case. That is a server in your own computer and it can also be installed on an USB-memory. It makes it easy to play around with lots of tests without hurting anything for others. And you can work fast without the need to FTP things and wait for a distant server to react.

    Check here:

    Good luck!

I am sorry it did not take the HTML-code for the link. It is: http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html

    Something fishy with this editor.

DesktopServer is an automated solution that will install XAMP for you. Just sayin’.

For example if my client already has a live website under http://www.domain.com.  When I install the wordpress on my local server on my pc, will I be able to specify a domain name, e.g http://www.domain.com? So then I don’t have to change the domain name when i move the website to a new server.

I’d like to ask one more hypothetical question.  If I was to install an instance of genesis studiopress wordpress website under a “secret” sub-directory on the server which is running a live html hand-coded website (with some php forms), and then develop the new website there, is there any chance that the standard development would affect the live website and is google going to index this “secret” directory?  Thank You!!

    einstein,

I was going to mention to setup a subdomain on the domain you want to develop…’subdomain.domain.com’.

    1) That way you will develop their website based on the server’s specs.

    2) Also your your database is already on the server and it is easier to move your content over.

    3) Regarding indexing….when you install WordPress check the box at the bottom of the page not to index.

Thank you, this is the best solution for me right now as I need to start developing soon! I will brush up my other skills for the future and install the server on my laptop as this is the way to go IMHO ;)

Hi Doak, I like your website by the way, this is the kind of business I would like to set up.  I was also wondering what ecommerce system did you use for your rose city soap shop and what is this template? I am looking to set up a similar online store and so far chose woocommerce, but there isnt a big choice of templates. Thank You!
