    A question about WordPress 3.8.2
I received a notice today about upgrading my RobGoss.com website which went smooth.

But my other website will not take the update I keep getting this error message

Warning: md5_file(/home2/rgoss/public_html/wp-admin/install.php) [function.md5-file]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home2/rgoss/public_html/wp-admin/includes/update-core.php on line 756

Warning: md5_file(/home2/rgoss/public_html/wp-admin/setup-config.php) [function.md5-file]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home2/rgoss/public_html/wp-admin/includes/update-core.php on line 756
The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions.: wp-admin/install.php, wp-admin/setup-config.php

    Installation Failed

Does anyone have a clue how I can fix this and get my second website updated to WordPress 3.8.2.

Thanks so much for any help

    Hi Rob,
I’ve heard of stuff like this happening when jumping a few versions, but it sounds like you’re talking about the auto-update that 3.8 has.

Have you tried a manual install, as opposed to the auto-update?

And indeed, you could look at actual file permissions, of course.

    Rob,
I just meant grabbing the new version here, de-compressing it, FTP-ing it up there and installing, totally manual. Kind of a pain and overkill, but could be done in a pinch.

But really, doing an upgrade on most hosts is so simple, and most decent hosts should have few problem. If I had a serious site that behaved like that, I’d investigate and find out why. If the host has funny security settings, you may need to give folders and/or files more permissive permissions. I occasionally run into goofy hosts that need such silliness.

Ok I’ve tryed installing WordPress 3.8.2 most of the install went ok but I notice there’re two file I can’t delete zof change the permission. Both these files are set to 000… which I know is not correct.

Here are the files I need to change
    Setup-config.php

    install.php

And that’s why I suggested contacting your host – to help with the permissions issue.

Files also have a second level of access, called Ownership. If your user on the server at the host has no access, there’s literally no way for you to change this unless you have ssh root access.

So your host has to fix it.

What I did is move those files the trash and uploaded the new ones. My host is talking about charging me a cleanbup fee to fix it and I said that’s not right.

Bummer. Who is this illustrious host so we can “recommend” them?

Hostgator, I got a email warning me about this problem and they stated they would block my account if I did not correct it. I did not even know this problem exist
