AngelaMemberHave you seen Carrie Dils post on this plugin?
http://www.carriedils.com/tips-genesis-extender/
I have the plugin, but haven't used it a lot. Really enjoyed her post and I think it shows the flexibility of the plugin.

AngelaMemberTHANK YOU so much! I've tested a few other permalink plugins, but not this one. (How did I miss it?!?) Appreciate the link!

AngelaMemberThanks for sharing this plugin! I was looking for something similar when I stumbled on this chain.
Brad, really appreciate all you do! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!

AngelaMemberBrad - Thanks for the link! I don't use Twitter nearly as much as I did a few years ago, but I should start making it a top resource once again.

AngelaMemberI'm a mid-level WordPress and Genesis user. When I first started, I quickly got tired of the themes here, but as I developed more skills - and found more helpful tutorials - I was able to make the Genesis themes more than just their shell.
While I think it would be great to have more themes with the customization built in, I do believe the "skeleton themes" (if you will) are important for individual creativity. It really does boil down to money and time. Many clients I've worked with don't have the cash - or won't put it out - for a superior custom design, so we work with what we have in the time allotted for the project.
I do wish there was a better way to find Genesis designers. I could never find a link here to an independent designer page (The one I did find was a bad URL.). I always found designers on their own sites. I bought a design from a wonderful designer outside of WordPress. I just happened to find her by accident. I'd like to be able to find independent designers more easily, just to have more theme options. If there is an updated URL, I'd love to bookmark it.

AngelaMemberAnita, thanks so much for your help on this thread. We discovered this afternoon that OpenX didn't have ANY ads associated with this test feed- just a grey placement box that only showed up in Dreamweaver for us. I'm not quite sure how they wanted us to test it on WordPress without any ads, but their team doesn't seem very familiar with the platform. Once they put ads with it, it worked.
I really appreciate your help! THANK YOU! I'll mark this resolved.

AngelaMemberThanks! Sure, this is just a demo, so it should not be a problem.
<!--/* OpenX IFrame tag */-->
<iframe id="522f95e1b1b79" name="522f95e1b1b79" src="http://ox-d.learfieldnews.com/w/1.0/afr?auid=478749&cb=INSERT_RANDOM_NUMBER_HERE" frameBorder="0" frameSpacing="0" scrolling="no" width="728" height="90"></iframe>This is what OpenX says about this code: I suspect that all that is more so needed is to find a suitable templated field within WordPress can can be used to implement the attached tag example.
I've used iframe before and we just copied and pasted into a text widget and it worked - with no special coding. Sort of like PollDaddy. We've used scripts in the same fashion. I've tried the code as is, changing INSERT_RANDOM_NUMBER_HERE to a random number, removing <!--/* OpenX IFrame tag */--> and pretty much anything I can think of, but it just does not show. The test feeds they sent earlier also didn't show.
Appreciate any feedback you have. Hopefully your fresh eyes can see something I don't! 🙂

AngelaMemberThanks! OpenX told us yesterday that this plugin will not work for us, because they are now at 3.0 and the plugin is for older systems. I'm pretty frustrated, since a key selling point was plugin integration with WordPress. There is also a different plugin on WordPress.org. I couldn't get either of these to work earlier.
I've never coded ad space in a template, but I'm wondering if that is what I will need to do to get it to work.

AngelaMemberHey Brad!
Thanks for the tutorial. That was actually what I'd followed yesterday. This morning, with a fresh set of eyes - and the help of diffchecker.com - I realized I'd missed a step on adjusting the right widget area. Works perfectly now. You have no idea how many times I looked over the CSS yesterday and missed it! Sheesh!
I really enjoy your blog and have recommended to others in my office.
Appreciate all you do!

AngelaMemberI like it! Agree with the two points above on the footer and the hover colors of the navigation bar. Overall, though, I like it.

AngelaMemberThis actually falls into a broader topic of the best way to make the theme compatible with IE browers 8 & 7. Suggestions appreciated. We have to do that before we go live.

AngelaMemberI'm going to close this topic, but may start a new one later on for compatibility. 47% of our readers use IE browsers, 19% of which are in IE 8. I'll have to do more research on compatibility issues with HTML5 and IE browsers before we switch over. We will launch with XHTML.
Thanks!

AngelaMemberAny other takers to this question?
I tried converting our demo site last night and all the fonts were super huge. Tried again today and the site was really off, with the sidebar not appearing until footer, so everything was full screen centered at top. I have no idea what changed overnight, but I'm sure I have bit of code in there that did it.
I've gone back to the XHTML stylesheet for now, but would love to convert before launch next week.
Our demo site is dev.brownfieldagnews.com. I used the free XHTML converter at CobaltApps.
The only thing I DID change this morning from what the converter gave me was the font size. I copied the code, pasted at the bottom and changed to 62.5. Could that have done this?

AngelaMemberThanks, Bill! I think it depends on your audience. At my company, our business audience LOVES our homepage photos and expect those on our website. On my personal site, I don't need it because I use large featured images with each post. Testing the last few days proved that.

AngelaMemberThanks! That was my thought. I did try a free HTML5 converter, but could not get the fonts to resize properly. Maybe I'll have better luck tomorrow!

AngelaMemberSteve -
You have a great list here! I'm redesigning our company site now and I can tell you that, knowing what you need is essential. Be sure to know what your audience will respond to as well.
On the slider... I tested a few themes and didn't have an issue when I did not use a slider in the widget. Sliders are typically built as a widget under Appearances. If the widget is empty, nothing will show. When you pick a theme, check specifically for that. Others may have had different experiences.
Header... I had to customize the Metro theme for our company redesign. This tutorial has some tips on that. (This blog is worth an email subscription. It is not my blog, but I found it after I read some great posts here.) You will find similar tutorials on the web or in the forums.
Colors...If you are familiar with CSS, you can customize colors and fonts as much as you want. Here is a tutorial on how to change fonts in a theme.
On HTML5...Check out this thread, which discusses HTML5-ready Genesis themes:
http://www.studiopress.community/topic/which-studiopress-themes-are-html5-ready/
You can also manually update your theme to HTML5 - but you will need to tweak some elements. Read this post as well.
If you are overwhelmed by some changes in coding, check out W3Schools. It will take some of the fear out of it.
If you want to use Genesis, but are no in love with a particular StudioPress theme, you can search the net for various designers who make Genesis-friendly themes. (For my personal blog, I went with Pretty Darn Cute Designs.)
Best of luck! Hope this information helps.
