Will your members be interacting with each other? Would you consider the site to be a “social network” of some kind? Buddypress has several plugins that will give you a “forum” area for the entire site, or you can use groups with forums dedicated to each group. There are several plugins for members to upload images to their profiles that work similar to say Facebook. Is this something you are looking to do?

I have the Sample loaded in two demos and don’t experience that. Could it be that you are local? Can you possibly install the theme on your hosting account just to see if it still does the same thing?
I noticed something similar on one of my themes but it was plugin related. Have you deactivated your plugins to see if continues to do that?
Your widget will contain different fields based on the newsletter service provider you are using, i.e., Constant Contact, MailChimp, AWeber, etc.

Let me ask this first – is there any particular reason why you aren’t using the original home page to accomplish this? If you are building a new home page, you should create a new file – maybe call it front-page.php and customize your home page. You could copy the home page, rename it front-page and customize that to what you need.

I see you got it all worked out. You did a great job. Love the colors. The borders make it stand out nicely.
If you change your theme to the default WordPress theme, do you still have the same problem. I used Reveal IDs and I don’t have that problem.
