John - Thanks - unfortunately it's not working. Is the above code correct? I see an end php tag as well as an empty open. I'm not sure why the following would be necessary to close and open and seems unnecessary. I am guessing it is there to add markup in case I'd want between the PHP open and close tags - which is very helpful. Unfortunately I don't see the topnav.php file being executed and appearing in that top navigation spot. It's just a file with markup to be included as a top nav.
add_action( ‘genesis_header’, ‘yourprefix_add_secondary_menu’, 20 );
function yourprefix_add_secondary_menu() {
include ('/home/mysite/public_html/menu/topnav.php');
}boldplanParticipant@john - thanks, I'm a bit late responding to your post. Will shoot you an email when I can figure out what we're going to do.
@hlegall - Using the # is not a solution. It's the problem. You cannot have a valid entry for the root menu item as a "#" because it's not a valid URL. If I want to have a landing page for Cars and then one for audi, bmw, etc. then you cannot use that symbol and need the actual page URL.It's unfortunate because, IMHO, the menu needs replacing. Some other themes work better and collapse like Twitter bootstrap as well. The lower menu using subcategories results in a large mess when collapsed on a mobile phone that is just impractical. Need to do the upper menu like the lower menu. Trying to figure out whether to use a replacement plugin or a custom menu and neither is a great solution.
boldplanParticipantHi John - I've been to your site before, very helpful. It's a great workaround and very grateful that you provide a solution at all. For most sites it will probably work like a charm, I wish it could fit in with my design. I'm just surprised that nobody at Studiopress saw this while they were testing the design and decided to make some changes. The responsive menu for Magazine Pro are impractical as is and don't work properly with a dropdown menu. It's an otherwise great theme and just needs to go the extra but very important mile. As I have other things I need to do, I may hire someone to just get done what I think should be done... maybe someone here if they want to contact me. 😉
Thanks again John and wishing you a happy 2014.
boldplanParticipantThanks genwrock - I tried Brad Potter's tutorial. Had to hack the js a bit to get it to work properly but it's working like a charm as the primary menu. This is the way it should have worked from the beginning, although I prefer using CSS and not JS whenever I can avoid it. For the moment I need to focus on content and in a little bit on the design.
PS Nice site and nice work.
boldplanParticipantActually I see Brad's example now. Perhaps that will work and I can style it appropriately. I don't know why he isn't using this and everyone else - at least it works on all mobile devices. Thanks.
boldplanParticipantWow - thanks for the quick reply.
http://demo.studiopress.com/magazine/sample/
Use that one in any mobile phone.
Thanks for the links. I saw the Brad Potter article but his site suffers from the same problem. Regarding the second one, it's a tab button that does a nice job for what it does but it's not an optimal solution from a styling standpoint.
Question - I have an existing HTML5/CSS3 responsive menu on the rest of my site. I'm wondering if there is a way I can insert a standard HTML5 / CSS3 menu easily into the Magazine Pro theme or any Genesis theme for that matter. I find them extremely hard to work with since so many things require filters and seem like backing into replacement. On a regular WordPress theme I can edit the header files but that's not so easily done with Magazine Pro. I'd sooner replace my responsive menu with that one.
boldplanParticipantThis would have been the ideal way to create the responsive menu. Makes you wonder why they didn't use this method.
boldplanParticipantWhoops... just put up my thread reporting a potential bug. The only way to have it work is to not have any page associated with the parent category. It's possible to replace menus with a plugin but I would highly prefer not to add yet another plugin and create more load time. No reason to do so. I'm surprised this issue isn't resolved as, unfortunately, it's rather glaring once you start using the theme.
boldplanParticipantBrad - no - the full posts themselves. I'm not sure whether they are automatically placed in the pages and don't see it in the documentation. I just assumed that there might be some relationship if you place a full size image into the post image:
boldplanParticipantLOL, perhaps I didn't make it clear. I'm trying to get WP to set this by default as being on for every user. I'm not sure that there is a setting for this if it is a manual setting on a per user basis. I'm not sure if this is a WP setting or a Genesis setting.
Again, thanks for your replies. Hope you're enjoying the weekend.
boldplanParticipantBrad - thanks. Is there a way to globally enable this as in all on or all off?
boldplanParticipantThere are pros and cons to each one. For the most part, I'm not a huge fan of the uber minimalism in many of the templates and moreso the HUGE spaces. That works great in physical rooms but not on monitors where you have to scroll, scroll, scroll...
I happen to think the old one looks more like a Magazine with many articles, etc. although it might appear a little dated in places. The new one works for me only because, stylistically, it's what I want to accomplish. with certain parts of the theme. Don't change it just because it's "newer" and might have some features you may never use. I think the OP did a really nice job customizing his magazine theme so it really works for his site and audience.
September 30, 2013 at 2:20 pm in reply to: Here is my site, starting from the theme magazine! #64826boldplanParticipantWow. After spending so much time with another theme, I realize that this is the one I need. On the bright side, now that I've gotten myself so familiar with Genesis and have customized many of the things I need, I'll be busy with working on this one. Can't wait, looks great, long overdue! 🙂
boldplanParticipantGot it. Not so difficult but not listed anywhere easily. The function has to be there at the end. You need to start with the php tags for the template name, then add a filter for the type of template, e.g. full width, etc. then remove the genesis loop and add a function for your custom loop. Glad I finally got it and that's how you do it.
boldplanParticipantNope... no page templates work like they do in WordPress. I realize now that the genesis(); function creates the entire page. The problem now is how do you execute PHP and place it within the body of the page? This is my frustration with Genesis. Not straightforward and easy to visualize and still can't find a way to create the same templates you can with stock WordPress.
boldplanParticipantHere's one example in the WordPress Codex - easy to do with WordPress stock - create a page/template, e.g. my404.php 404 page:`<?php get_header(); ?>
<h2>Error 404 - Not Found</h2>
<?php get_sidebar(); ?>
<?php get_footer(); ?>`I tried this but the sidebars aren't working properly (using the education and metro templates) and I think you need to use the genesis function at the end for a template:`
<?php get_header(); ?><?php genesis_before_content_sidebar_wrap(); ?>
<div id="content-sidebar-wrap"><?php genesis_before_content(); ?>
<div class="content"><?php echo category_description( $category_id ); ?>
<?php genesis_before_loop(); ?>
<?php genesis_loop(); ?>
<?php genesis_after_loop(); ?></div><!-- end #content -->
<?php genesis_after_content(); ?></div><!-- end #content-sidebar-wrap -->
<?php genesis_after_content_sidebar_wrap(); ?><?php get_footer(); ?>`
boldplanParticipantBrad - thanks. It's not on there but I'm guessing I can swap out single with the is_home from the codex. Many thanks.
(Also like your plugin which makes certain things much more convenient even though I like getting under the hood. 😉 )boldplanParticipantSo I looked at this page: http://my.studiopress.com/tutorials/category-blog-page/
Unfortunately it doesn't do much of anything. It just lists all the posts in a category. It doesn't use the text typed into the page or its layout. It doesn't use the metadata associated with a category such as the description entered. There is also no way to assign this page to come up instead of the category page that is default. Is there a way to customize this page beyond the stock category pages?
boldplanParticipantBrad - Your blog is excellent! To answer your question, I've checked the resources extensively. I'm referring to both. I've begun to realize why I miss the 30 files for stock WordPress over the handful for SP. I've noticed that SP themes are sufficient for a 1 author blog but have challenges elsewhere.
For example - the "news" templates. They look nice on the home page but are clearly not sufficient if you're running an actual WordPress based news site. You need a proper author box with author links per post, on an author page and on a list of authors page. You also don't put in links inside the author text as is done.
So I looked at the WordPress Codex and nothing works in SP unfortunately: http://codex.wordpress.org/Author_Templates
There are other issues I'm tackling which you'll see that are common but just very difficult to manage (e.g. - why even bother writing category descriptions if you can't easily get them to display in a category page?) I'll deal with just this one and the other issue I'm having a problem with when converting my current template to a genesis theme.
boldplanParticipantIn fact, I don't see any place where you can output the description of a category that has been entered. This would seem to be a simple task but can't find where to do it.
