November 25, 2017 at 7:47 am in reply to: Featured Posts widget "visibility" feature not working #213933CallevaMember
I think we must have had some customisation done in the past because this does not seem to be an official Genesis feature. I have created a new category and assigned the posts I wanted to display to that category, and set the widgets to display posts from that and it seems to be working fine.
CallevaMemberThanks for the info. It's definitely an option now !
But, in the meantime, I've also been looking at other stuff and stumbled across Dynamik from Cobalt Apps. Looks like it's flexible enough for me to tinker with, without getting bogged down in coding (I know I said something "out of the box", but I do like to tweak!). I'm going to have a look around to see if there are some examples of ecommerce sites using Dynamik.
CallevaMemberThanks, the Going Green theme looks good. I especially like the secondary nav menu that I think could be used for different "shop" categories.
However, my main concern here is that the front page is very blog orientated. I'm looking for more of a shop front. I'm not sure if this could be changed to display things like woocommerce featured products ?CallevaMemberThanks - a bit more info about products - it will be heating supplies (firewood, logs, gas, coal) and stoves. Plus a few other related products.
I had a look at a few other theme developers, but as I've limited dev skills and I'm used to Genesis, I was hoping to stick with a Genesis theme.
CallevaMemberOkay, so I think I've worked out how to do this, and it was easy in the end!:
Edit each menu item and change the 'Navigation Label' from just text, such as 'Home' to include the image tag, example:
Navigation Label:
<i class="icon-home"></i> Home
Seems to work fine !
CallevaMemberSo, I've got a little further with understanding the issue, but still don't know how to fix it ! I'm applying the icon shortcode (e.g. icon-home) under the menu item's CSS classes option. This produces the following code:
<li id="menu-item-19" class="icon-home menu-item menu-item-type-custom menu-item-object-custom menu-item-home menu-item-19"><a href="#">Home</a></li>
The suggestion appears to be that the reason the two items (icon & text) are not lining up correctly is because it's applying the font-awesome icon class to the li tag instead of its own tag. Try replacing your current items with this:
<li id="menu-item-19" class="menu-item menu-item-type-custom menu-item-object-custom current-menu-item current_page_item menu-item-home menu-item-19"> <a href=#><i class="icon-home"></i> Home</a> </li>
This will cause the icon to appear in line with the text, it will also allow it to be click as a link. The above syntax (using an i tag) is the standard way to use the library.
But, I don't know how to apply this to a menu item. Any pointers ??
Thanks.
CallevaMemberOkay, had a play - looking good!
Thanks again.
CallevaMemberThanks Brad - we're getting there !
It's shifted stuff around so I'll have a play with the CSS and see if I can't line it up nicely.
Appreciate your help - again 🙂
Kier.
CallevaMemberThis reply has been marked as private.CallevaMemberTried the second option - that doesn't appear to have an effect on the page (I searched the page source and found no reference to it). Sorry to be a pain !
Appreciate you're trying to help me out here - am I okay to send over the theme ? I'm not breaking any T&Cs am I, and will end up getting water boarded or something similar ?!
CallevaMemberThanks Brad, I had a play with that but it didn't have the desired effect !
That appeared to add a new widget-area to the header. It appears that the search_area is in the secondary_area.
I've left the change in there for now, if you have a moment to look.
Thanks.
CallevaMemberThanks Ryan - did the #content changes (and also the one #sd-content) - cleared caches and it's working 🙂
Anyone told you you're amazing today yet 😉
CallevaMemberOdd - it worked okay for me. Apologies for messing you about like this!
Anyway, just cleared cache/cloudflare, refreshed my browser and the www site is now showing the updated css.
Thanks.
CallevaMemberThanks Ryan - appreciate your time.
I've updated style.css and pasted in the exact code from the tutorial. I still can't see any effect.
When I inspect an element with firebug, I see:
div.sharedaddy div.sd-block {
border-top: 1px solid #ddd;
border-top: 1px solid rgba(0,0,0,.13);
padding: 10px 0 5px;
margin: 0;
width: 100% !important;
But the css I copied in has:
.content div.sharedaddy div.sd-block {
border: none;
padding: 0;
}So it still doesn't look like it's overriding the jetpack default styling.
Thanks,
-Kier,CallevaMemberHi,
That's what I thought - use style.css, otherwise if I upgrade the jetpack plugin my changes may get overwritten.
But, when I stuck it in style.css it made no difference - I realize the guide said it was a starting point for customizing, but I expected it to make a change and then I would just need to tweak colors, etc.
I'll stick the code back in and re-check.
Thanks.
CallevaMemberHi Ryan,
Works perfect ! Thanks, appreciate your help.

CallevaMemberHave done a bit more research and it looks like the wordpress export/import may be my friend here - just to grab the content. So, I'm going to run up a fresh wordpress install on our test site, install Genesis + child theme, then import content from our live site. And then get tweaking !
CallevaMemberGary - thanks for the reply. Our site is a company website, so I would plan on using a test site to "rebuild" it, rather than playing with the live site.
We currently use blogvault to backup/restore and this has worked fine, but obviously when I restore it to the test site, everything gets restored. As well as doing a theme upgrade, I wanted to also take the opportunity to redesign the layout, etc.
My original thoughts was to start from a fresh WordPress install, but this would mean having to re-create the content. I wondered if there was a way to keep/restore the content, but leave out the old theme-related stuff, plugins, etc. But perhaps it is easier just to restore the full site and resolve the issues.
