My suspicion turned out to be correct. I made sure to purge ALL files prior to upload (using ServerPress DesktopServer's Direct Deploy method). Doing the upload again resolved the issue. So it could have been the page (or (URL) rewrite function getting messed up on the HOME page. That would seem to fit ...
Thanks for hanging in there with me anitac! Learned a bit more about the Genesis Toolbar Extras plugin. 🙂
Sometimes just thinking aloud helps. 🙂 Cheers.
Green BeingMemberHi anitac,
Thanks for the followup. I posted a similar message with Cobalt Apps Forum, as the symptoms originated with the Genesis Extender plugin. Cobalt Apps, as usual, were very helpful, but we determined that it is likely that that plugin is not in play for this issue. Why? Because "Genesis Toolbar Extras [and Genesis Extender] plugin was showing good results for every page but my HOME page." By this I mean that the black WordPress Admin Bar (that contains the Genesis Toolbar Extras features) is present on every page on my live website EXCEPT the HOME page. I provided the link to my affected website above, along with the specifics to the versions of the plugins, themes, and WordPress that are invovled.
I may indeed be in the wrong forum, but I wasn't sure. I thought that Genesis Toolbar Extras was a Genesis product, so thanks for pointing me to the correct forum for that plugin. The same with the Genesis Extender, now that Eric Hamm has done the integration with Genesis.
According to what I can research on my own, this seems like an initialization problem in the Loop that seems to omit the code for the wp-admin-bar in the head section for the HOME page. Again, this is all working in my local Apache web server, but perhaps something went wrong in the upload to the live site. Maybe a residual hidden file (e.g., .htaccess) didn't get purged. I may have to purge and upload again. Not sure. Theoretically, the only difference should be the server, but in reality something must have got got mangled in the software.
I will go over to the Genesis Toolbar Extras Forum and see if someone else has witness similar symptoms.
Green BeingMemberI already did. Not conflicted. Looking for insights. Been getting the finger pointing otherwise. 🙂
Green BeingMemberAfter some fiddling, I got the Simple Sidebars to behave. 🙂 Still would like to find some instructions or tutorial, to be sure. I will look some more as well.
Also, would like to figure out how to get rid of the spurious widget areas in my Widgets Admin Area. Not sure where to find the ID for a sidebar for example, especially when two sidebars have (inadvertently) the same name. Also, where to you safely put the unregister PHP code? Which function.php file, for example? Admin? Theme? wp-includes? Or just use the Genesis Extender Custom?
Thanks.
Green BeingMemberOkay, it was a permalink thing. I changed the permalink structure ...
FROM:Â Â http://www.example.com/%postname%
TO: Â Â Â Â http://www.example.com/%postname%/%category%
and it seemed to clear up the issue.
Still, it would be good to know if this was the correct thing to do in general and why it worked if it was.
Green BeingMemberOkay, call the dogs off of this one. 🙂 I just did realize you could add more than one widget to an existing widget area, like the Home- Top in the Executive Theme. Yikes! I thought it was going to be something like with turning your footer widget into a 3-column widget area, which the Executive theme already had inbuilt.
Eric Hamm, of Genesis Extender and Catalyst fame, was quick to point this out to me. I was looking for a way to do this with Genesis Extender, which is a fantastic plugin!
Green BeingMemberOkay, there seems to be more than a few articles about adding 3-column widgets to the footer with any Genesis Theme (e.g., http://www.wpsquare.com/add-3-column-widgetized-footer-genesis/), but it seems that that particular functionality is built in, maybe by popular request. Not sure, but adding three columns of widgets to an existing widget area is what I want to do.
In essence, I would like to add three-column widgets to the Home- Top Widget area. That would be simplest solution (given no nearby hooks) and I realize that I would have to edit the functions.php, but apparently not as simple as adding the following lines, as with the footer widget area:
/** Add 3-column footer support in genesis */
add_theme_support( 'genesis-footer-widgets',3
);
This must be possible, and not as a customization, as it was done with the DEMO to the Executive Child Theme. Right?Green BeingMemberOkay, I figured this out for myself. Need to set the "featured image" on the Post Edit page. Who knew!? Went back to WordPress Codex and read that this was something changed in version 3.0 and the way you have to set Post Thumbnails instead of the "insert into Post" button. A theme must support this feature for this to work, which, apparently, Executive indeed does. I am trying to be a bit specific here to help the next person to wander into this "pothole" ... 🙂
Everything is cooking nicely now ...
Does anyone know how to set excerpts for images drawn from the Portfolio repository so that they show up in the excerpt area of the slider?
Green BeingMemberSo I dumped all of the pictures in the upload folder. I completely deleted and reinstalled the Executive Theme. I reloaded the portfolio library with three pictures: two that are 1040 X 445 and one that is 700 X 445. Labeled them and point the Genesis Responsive Slider at the Portfolio. That seemed to work just fine, but nothing in the except section set to 29% width. Then I loaded the same images into three separate post pages with title and description and categorized two as "Slider" and one "Uncategorized". Went to view and the slider has reverted to 15px in height. Went back to set the slider to point at the portfolio and everything was fine. Looked pretty much like the DEMO, except those are pointing at posts!
What am I missing here? Why does the slider height collapse? I can click into the 15px high area and it will go to the associated post page. But it will not fully display in the slider.
Green BeingMember@SoZo.  You were correct. Upon, further investigation, the issue WAS related to the Genesis Design Palette plugin, which I DID install myself. However (and this could be instructive for others), the "Load custom CSS file on site" was checked on my live site and NOT on my test site. Symptom: no footer on my test site. Who knew?! 🙂
Sorry SoZo. Thanks for chiming in anyway. 🙂 You did make me check out the story on this plugin thing more closely. The confusion, for me, was that the plugin folder name is Genesis Palette, but the plugin name is Genesis Design Palette. So no issue with the plugin everyone.
Cheers.
Green BeingMemberI believe that this plugin is what comes with AgentPress and not something I installed. It gets loaded right after the AgentPress link. So, I believe the developer is StudioPress. Right?
I did notice on the same site that the Genesis Toolbar Extras plugin was not showing up on my test site or under Plugins>Installed Plugins, but was in my plugin directory on my hard disk. I deleted it and installed it again and everything in that respect went back to normal. Would try to do the same with the Genesis Palette plugin, but that came with the AgentPress theme.
So something seems to be going awry with my plugins on my test site. Hmmm. Thoughts ...
Green BeingMemberI have a logo image that is 612px X 126px that I want to insert into the header section. I do use the Appearance>Header dialogue, but cannot get the process to stop cropping the image to 400px in width. I did override the .header-image #title-area CSS width to 612 and this shows up as being successful in Firebug and the image area did grow to 612px according to my screen ruler, but the image is still cropped to 400px. Thoughts?
Oh yes, I am using the AgentPress theme.
