1. Use code as seen here to add new widget to the homepage. http://www.basicwp.com/add-new-widget-genesis-homepage/
2. You can duplicate same code to another another widget area and then use column classes to show content in two columns.

Probably your functions.php file had same function name for a different code. Try code as seen on this page – http://wpbeaches.com/remove-html-tags-attributes-comments-genesis-child-theme/
Not just Altitude pro, even other newer themes will look broken IE8. Open official theme demos in IE8 to preview.
It’s issue with IE8 and not themes. As such IE8 is not supported anywhere now. So, not much can be done in this regard. IE8 browser just can not read HTML5 + CSS3 goodness.

Looks like you are using awaken genesis theme. You can add shortcode in a text widget and drop that widget at a specific widget area for the homepage. To summarize, go to widgets section to add shortcode.
Ideally, you may also see essential grid widget displayed there – it is better to use that directly

To be frank, this is tricky. Give a disclaimer warning to the client, things might break with update.
If client is too pressed to have same website look, re-create corporate theme look on html5 + css3 in the form of custom Genesis child theme.
