@nickthegeek, I echo @road2ruin in saying that your explanation is very helpful in understanding why the change to the forums. I've been struggling to understand why (in my opinion and experience) such a great forum was changed.
My suggestion would be that Brian, you or someone create an email or post that explains the reasoning behind the change – perhaps going into even more detail than you did above. Most StudioPress customers are very supportive and trust that you guys are doing what is best for all concerned. Laying out the downsides of the old forums, which many of us (me included) weren't aware of, as well as the positives of the new approach moving forward would go a long way towards quelling the concern we see in so many posts in the new forums.
Again, Nick, thanks for your explanation.
IslanddogMember@Andrea, I'm very happy to hear that the intent is to grab a lot of the information off the old forums and create tutorials. There have been many times I've needed to know how to make minor (and major) modifications to a child theme and found just what I needed already addressed in the forums. This enabled me to get right to work immediately without having to engage a support person and wait for a response.
I'm REALLY hoping that access to all that great information in the old forums is available for quite a while. I guess eventually the new forums will build up good info too, but I'd hate to lose access to years and thousands of posts worth of valuable help.
Again, bravo on converting some of this to tutorials. Here's to hoping that starts to occur sooner rather than later!
IslanddogMemberWhile I like the download areas, code snippets, etc. I'm not sure about moving away from the support forums to one- on-one support.
For me, I'd say 95% of the time, when I had a question on how to do something, I could search the forum and come up with an answer, code snippet, etc. That meant I could immediately get to work solving the issue – without having to post the question and engage a support person. Now, as I understand it, questions will need to be placed on a ticket and wait for support to respond? Or, as @Jeff says above, some questions should be placed in this new forum and others as a ticket?
I'm sure you'll clarify all this soon. And I'm very happy that the old forum will still be available (hopefully for a LONG time!) as it contains a wealth of information. Maybe over time the new forum will accumulate as much helpful info as the old one.
As an avid Genesis fan, I really liked the forums and the positive, helpful attitude of all the moderators. I'm sure moving forward the plan is to combine the best of the old and new to create an even better experience!
