I think you would need to remove at least one of your sidebars in order to make things wider. I fine having just the content and one sidebar much more suitable, hope this helps.
When you say scrolling text and you give a bit more details thanks.

Yes they can be ajusted by accessing your style.css file.
After viewing your codes for your images I see the following ‘S’ https://inspirewisconsin.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/employers1.jpg in your url just remove it and see if your images will display correctly.
How are you inserting your images in to the widgets sections?
Have you tryed deactivating your plugins? sometinms they can cause all kinds of problems like this.
The only thing I can think is to assign a few custom widgets to the home page to display the items you mentioned.
Yes you would need to edit them from your cpanel. Depending on which ones you use most of then can be customized by their css file.
