http://www.robgoss.com / Follow me Twitter / https://twitter.com/robgossRobGMemberYou can modarate your comments or use spam protection instead of cutting off your comments it would define the purpose of having a blog. There are a number of good plugins that can accomplish this.

I use Hostgator and love them.

http://www.robgoss.com / Follow me Twitter / https://twitter.com/robgossRobGMemberYes every time I do any editing sometimes two to three times a week it's a habit. I've never had any problems. I also run backups from my cpanel it makes it easier if you need your work restored by your hosting provider they will not charge you if you have your own backups.
But I make so many changes I am always backuping up my content.

http://www.robgoss.com / Follow me Twitter / https://twitter.com/robgossRobGMemberThe best practice is to just keep a copy of your Style.css and function.php files and so on. I edit my files each and everyday and sometimes break things but as long and you have your backups you will be ok.
Keep in mind if for any reason you break lets say, your function.php file because of someting you changed and you try accessing your WordPress dashboard and you get that ERROR - message you can always access your files from your cpanel with any problems and just remove any bad coding you may have added and your website will begin working.
Hope this help
