Do you want to add the slider in place of a featured page/post in the Home Featured Area, or in addition to it?
If you are replacing one widget with another, you should just install the Genesis Responsive Slider, activate it, and then drag it into the Home featured widget area.
Otherwise, if you are looking to add another widget, you can follow this tutorial (modifying widget name etc...):
http://www.briangardner.com/home-widget-area-eleven40/SusanModeratorIf your site is down because of a change made to your functions.php file, you will need to replace your functions.php file with a fresh copy on your hosting site.
SusanModeratorYou can add support for a custom header in your functions.php file:
... edited to remove the code, as there is apparently an error in there, and I don't want people who are searching for a solution in the future to use this code.
(You can change the height and width to your preferred dimensions)...
SusanModeratorTry this plugin:
SusanModeratorYou need to add the code to call it in the functions.php file. In the case of the Backcountry theme, the function is in the secondary menu, and the functions.php includes this code:
/** Add description to secondary navigation */ add_filter( 'walker_nav_menu_start_el', 'add_description', 10, 4 ); function add_description( $item_output, $item, $depth, $args ) { $args = (array) $args; if ( $args['theme_location'] != 'primary' ) { return preg_replace( '/(<a.*?>[^<]*?)</', '$1' . "<span class=\"menu-description\">{$item->post_content}</span><", $item_output ); } else { return $item_output; } }
You can adjust the code accordingly to reference the primary menu.
SusanModeratorAs far as I am aware, renaming a child theme has the same impact as installing a new theme - you will need to populate any of the widget areas again, but the ones you used with the previous child theme are stored at the bottom of the Widgets screen in the dashboard, so it's just a matter of dragging them into place. The settings are still there.
SusanModeratorI would submit a support ticket - I doesn't sound like your issue is related to some kind of customization - you're looking to add basic theme functionality.
SusanModeratorHi, Lenz: I'm glad you were able to get it all resolved; you're right, though - the instructions talk about creating custom menus, but didn't tell you to put one in the header right.
I'll go ahead and close this as "resolved" - let me know if you need additional assistance!
SusanModeratorDo you have a caching plugin? If so, go ahead and disable it.

Here is an official code snippet from the WordPress codex on how to do that:
SusanModeratorThanks for the update; I'm glad you were able to resolve the issue yourself; thanks also for posting back the solution, so that others can take note.
Like you, I'm a StudioPress customer, not an employee. 🙂
Closing this thread as "resolved".
SusanModeratorSince nobody has responded to this post in over two months, I figured there would be no harm in suggesting that you try Nick's plugin again - he's made some updates to it.
SusanModeratorYou have marked this as resolved, and since you didn't include a URL, I can't check a site to see if it has been resolved. If you are still having an issue, please report back. Thanks!
SusanModeratorPossibly a good suggestion, but as I've not been involved in the non-profit sector, I'm wondering what a non-profit organization needs in a website that couldn't be done in any of the themes? Just curious...
SusanModeratorLooks good; loads quickly for me on Chrome. Nice job.
SusanModeratorGo to Appearance > Themes > Customize > the options will be in the drop down on the left (screenshot here)
SusanModeratorRick - since you haven't had a response here for 3 days, maybe do a callout on Twitter. Use the hashtag #GenesisWP - there are lots of kind people on there that may be able to give you 5 minutes of their time.
Also, you might want to consider giving a little more information - are you looking for assistance with CSS styling, for example, or PHP changes? That way, someone can be prepared to assist.
SusanModeratorMy recommendation would be to install the Genesis Featured Widget Amplified Plugin, and check the box to limit the number of characters (to display) for your post titles.
SusanModeratorI just viewed your site in Firefox, and I'm not seeing any issues - your sidebar is on the right hand side of your site. Were you able to resolve this?
