Magazine 2.0 Child Theme Available

We are happy to announce the release of the Magazine 2.0 child theme. This WordPress theme works on the Genesis Framework and can be downloaded by Pro Plus members in the support forum. All others can purchase the package here.

Updating to Magazine v2.0

This version underwent a major code update which means there’s not an easy update path. If you’re happy with your site built on a previous version of the theme, there’s no need to update.

The first part of the update was a complete rewrite of CSS which is based on the updated Genesis sample child theme. This will allow for more efficient coding and easier customization. In addition to that, we rewrote the home.php file so upon theme activation, the standard loop loads until the home widgets are placed into their appropriate areas.

Theme Features

The Magazine child theme includes the following features: 7 color styles (blue, green, lavender, orange, pink, red and teal), 6 layout options, custom background, custom header, featured images, fixed width, theme options, threaded comments.

Genesis Tabs Coming Soon

You might notice is that the Magazine theme demo is now running the Genesis Slider plugin. The Slider, as you know, was extracted out of child themes and made into a standalone plugin. We will be doing the same thing with the tabs (coming soon), which the Magazine theme is already styled for.

Take it for a test drive…

  1. Like what you have done with Genesis in general :) On other hand, visually this upgrade reminds me of a look Lifestyle had in Child version 1, one that I finally upgraded other day to v.2. I always loved both Themes and now I’m that closer to going Magazine :-)

  2. Nice work – looks great! I am thinking about using this as my new design. One question: Is it possible to add widgets on the footer (area)?

  3. Looking good :)

  4. This is great. I am planning to use this on my next project!

  5. This might not be a big deal but I just need to make sure I downloaded the right one. As far as I can remember, it never happened before so I’m just a bit confused. I just downloaded the new version and uploaded it to my site. Here it says Magazine 2.0 but the one I have on my Theme page says Magazine 1.1. It’s the same thing, yes? No, I haven’t tested it yet.

Thank you for all the good things you do! :-)

  6. Very timely info. I’m setting up a new blog, and was planning to use the Education child. However, I found it to be too difficult to customize to achieve the look I want. I’m pleased to see that the background and header are customizable. I think this might be the one I’m looking for.

  7. So tempting I had to buy it. Looks great!

  8. Just in time! I was actually going to send you an email today hoping I could get a advanced/beta version of this because I wanted to use it on a project I was starting today.

  9. Looks better Compared To Old Magazine Theme.

  10. Nice and clean. I’d like the option to flip from the front page to sidebar/content, but overall, a very nice choice for when I reboot my new layout in 2012. How are the updates coming with the slider? I’d love to get rid of those annoying arrows.

    • @Ed:
The Slider is actually a plugin called “Genesis Slider” – you can set an option in the Slider settings to not display any arrows :)

    • Ed, you can select sidebar/content in the Theme Settings page and the homepage will honor that. As for the Slider updates, they are going great – we actually pushed out another minor one yesterday.

  11. I already have the old Magazine theme. Do I have to purchase this one or is there an upgrade or upgrade instructions?

  12. The theme looks great!

Can I make one small suggestion… On the test drive site for the themes that have multiple colors, it would be great to see the front page for the color changes (example: on the ELLE theme when you click different colors links, it shows the change on the front page instead of blog page.)

  13. Purchased the frameword and trying to decide between this magazine theme and the pixel happy theme. I want to set up somewhat of ezine and love the look of the magazine theme, however am i able to modify the gunmetal gray color to white and upload customized logo/artwork (graphic designer friend doing & also want to be able to customize colors for branding)? Also does the magazine theme allow you to have advertising spots on the sidebar as you would be able to do with the pixel happy theme?

thanks a BUNCH! uber excited to get this going with genesis!

  14. Looking for help…any suggestions-? Im lost-
