News 2.0 Child Theme Available

We are happy to announce the release of the News 2.0 child theme. This WordPress theme works on the Genesis Framework and can be downloaded by Pro Plus members in the support forum. All others can purchase the package here.

Updating to News v2.0

This version underwent a major code update which means there’s not an easy update path. If you’re happy with your site built on a previous version of the theme, there’s no need to update.

The first part of the update was a complete rewrite of CSS which is based on the updated Genesis sample child theme. This will allow for more efficient coding and easier customization. In addition to that, we rewrote the home.php file so upon theme activation, the standard loop loads until the home widgets are placed into their appropriate areas.

Theme Features

The News child theme includes the following features: 7 color styles (blue, green, orange, pink, purple, red and teal), 6 layout options, custom background, custom header, featured images, fixed width, theme options, threaded comments.

Genesis Tabs Plugin

You might notice is that the News theme demo is now running the Genesis Tabs plugin. This functionality was extracted out of the News 1.0 child theme and made into a standalone plugin.

Take it for a test drive…

  1. Simpler, better. Love it!

  2. Alright, so I’m in the midst of a big impromptu style change on my personal site (my non-money-making site, I should mention) and was suffering through endless hours of theme indecision (and wasted time) until just a moment ago.

Long story short: I needed a nice, clean news-based theme. I always prefer Genesis but never loved the “Magazine” theme and thought the original “News” theme was a little outdated. I checked here last night during my search for any new releases, woke up this morning, spent another 90 minutes searching, and just checked back here before hitting the “Purchase” button on a theme I really liked but wasn’t convinced I loved.

Needless the say, I’ll be happily working with News 2.0 in the next few minutes.

Seems I should have written “long story long” above 😉 In any case, cheers to Brian and company, you guys have been making my life easier since Revolution!

  3. Nice design, awesome job… thanks for updating this much awaited theme

  4. FANTASTIC simply the best package I ever bought !

  5. Nice upate, I like it. Once again: Less is more – you rock!

  6. Wow, this is amazing! I love it and will be using in the near future.

  7. donnacha of Wordskill :

    Impressively minimal.

  8. You guys ROCK! You have no idea how happy I am that I purchased your Pro Package! It was suggested by my OC WordPress Group, and I LOVE it!

    Thanks guys & gals!

  9. Thanks for the News update, been waiting on this one for a while.

  10. That was awesome impoverishment in news theme.
    Great work.

  11. Very nice theme. News 2.0 is beautiful.

  12. It’s a beaut, guys. The design is just the right balance of simplicity and functionality.

  13. News has always been one of my favorite themes. This is a really clean elegant update. Im going to experiment with custom post type for “news updates” later tonight.

  14. I purchased this one as well. How do I get the update for this one?

  15. Looks good, well thought out and ready for lots of updates.

  16. Overall theme looks more cool now. But i feel, Black Navigation bar has big font that doesn’t suits for big news or magazine sites who want to include many categories in navigation bar.

  17. Hi Brian,

When will you offer responsive design options to over ride fixed width

  18. I love the News child theme update along with the Genesis Tabs. I will be updating my site to the newest version asap. Great job!

  19. Is there any way to add footer widgets?

  20. More questions, can the category titles be easily changed?

  21. Thanks very much Brian. I have a significant website and I’m a bit nervous about making a switch, so I’m still doing my homework. My main concerns is I have thousands of photos on my blog and I’m worried about the formatting and such getting weirded out. Are there any forums or an article where migrating from one theme to another is a topic?

  22. Does migrating from one theme to another affect your current content…?
I want to install a new professional wp theme…
After switching to a new theme, is it possible to switch back to that one you were using before?

  23. Brian this is great! Love the simple clean look! Let me ask you something though….

Does StudioPress have a Newspaper theme in the works? As opposed to just a straight up News theme

I manage a sports website that I WOULD LOVE to move to StudioPress,, and I’ve been looking high and low for a newspaper theme for months. I finally found one over at Gabfire Themes, however I would prefer to use Genesis/StudioPress over any other theme house. You guys rock! and it would be a perfect fit for my site with your SEO capabilities and flexibility!

    Here is what Gabfire has

It’s actually pretty good, and I love that it feels like your actually reading from a newspaper and has sort of that old school, newspaper feel. It’s a pretty good fit for my site, because I want my readers to feel as if they are reading a newspaper.

Just thought I’d ask, because if I had my druthers, all the sites I manage would be with you guys!

I realize you wouldn’t make a theme for just one person, but I definitely think it’s a niche that you guys could run with because there really aren’t any quality Newspaper themes out there at the moment.

But if you ever think about building one, PLEASE let me know buddy! Good stuff
