Prose Theme

What’s New With Prose 1.5

One of the biggest changes you’ll see is the updated Design Settings UI, which is now formatted in one column and uses the new Genesis Admin class to build its settings pages. We’ve added a few more options for design control, and made some changes to the default Prose style. (More spacing, better typography, etc.)

In addition to the updated Design Settings page, we also created a Custom Code page, which is where custom CSS and custom functions can be placed. These files will now be saved in the /wp-content/ directory of your WordPress install, rather than in the Prose child theme folder.

This means that you should not be modifying the style.css or functions.php files inside the Prose theme folder, as those will get overwritten in a Prose update.

Automatic Updates

You might wonder why we moved the custom files outside the child theme – the answer is quite simple, and something we know you’ll enjoy.

After you manually update this one time (see below), Prose will now have automatic updates.

That’s right Prose now gives you the ability to auto update with one simple click. In order to avoid CSS and functions from being overwritten in an update, we had to place them outside the child theme.

Mobile Responsive in Design

Another major update to the Prose theme is that it is now built for responsiveness on devices such as iPads, iPhones and other smart phones. How cool is that?

Updating to Prose 1.5 from 1.0

Because a lot of the core code in Prose was rewritten, there’s a few steps you need to take. Fortunately, the ladies over at Site Setup Kit have helped us out by writing instructions on how to upgrade.

Learn how to manually update to Prose 1.5.

  1. Beautifully Simple… Simply Beautiful.

    Great work guys :)

  2. That sounds great. I just built a site with Prose, and had broken out my own functions and CSS separately after thinking about the update issue. Now I won’t even have to use my one-liner to pull in my function file, I reckon. And delighted to have some responsive code in there.

That’s an interesting pitch for a Site Setup Kit. It would be interesting to see how much that sells.

    Cheers, Dave

  3. Nice theme,

There is a pain I am having right now is how to put the social share button such as: Facebook share, Twitter and G+,

The mobile theme response works great but when I add code on my own for social sharing, it breaks everything.

I know it may out of scope of a theme, but I think we all you like to have your support in guideline on how to place the social buttons on Genesis Mobile responsive.

I even hope, it could include as a plugins or details tutorial on this.

  4. Your timing could not have been more perfect. Thanks for the update. Hope to see more tutorials on the other themes that are a bit less design friendly. Meanwhile, Prose will work great for the mobile responsive.

  5. I sort of like the minimalist themes for writers. It suggests content over design. I tried a no-frills, all white design once and kept it for about a week. I just love color too much!

    • Have you seen the customization of Prose in showcase section? They look great and not that “minimalist”
Prose is one of my favorite themes and the one I bought when joining StudioPress.

  6. Excellent. The one click auto update saves a lot of time. Thanks Studio Press Team.

  7. Woohoo! A buddy of mine and I have been talking a bit about responsive design lately. I’m so psyched you built it into Prose. Thanks for the link to Wendy and Pamela’s tutorial. Can’t wait to start playing with it.

  8. I have used Thesis and I just starting using Prose–it is FANTASTIC. There is no comparison. Prose wins hands down.

And one giant woo-hoo for Site Setup Kit–that is one whale of a deal (the Prose Cheat Sheet is worth the price). You’ll feel confident with Prose in a flash. Pamela and Wendy have created an unbelievable resource for those of use who use Prose.

    Thanks to all of you!

  9. Great stuff as always guys!

  10. The Design Settings options is fabulous! The theme is clean, super easy to customize, and future upgrades should be much easier. Prose has become a framework within a framework.

  11. I wonder if it’s necessary to buy the whole package of Genesis Pro Plus to benefit of the new features if one have purchased only the Prose 1.0 Child Theme and Genesis and some other themes separately…
It needed to be purchased separately as well?

    • Yes, 1.5 is free if you already have 1.0, even if you don’t have Pro Plus. If you haven’t received an upgrade email, then request one through their contact page. Alternatively, if you still have the email with the download link for your 1.0 purchase, then you can click on the download link and you’ll get the new version, provided you haven’t exceeded the five download limit. That’s how I got the new version.

  12. Will the Custom Code page make its way to other themes as well?

  13. Very simple but powerful theme. I have been on the fence about buying Genisis but recently heard yoast talk about you guys and say you have some of the best SEO of all the themes and frameworks. Getting off the fence.

  14. Great idea placing the css style sheet outside the child theme. A big time saver. :~)

  15. The general image is still the same as before, although a bit more modern looking. This is what it takes to give the theme continuity. Very easy to consult.

  16. That is so impressive, you guys really did great on this one !!! Thanks a lot !

  17. Thanks alot. I love prose. I completed all of the steps at set up kit and I am prepared to upgrade to the newest version, but how do I download the new zip file without being charged again to update?

    • To access a new copy of the theme, please just use the link provided in your original download email.
If you no longer have that, please use the contact form to request a copy of that link (be sure to include the name and email address used for the purchase).

Please Note: If you’ve downloaded a copy before, please do save this new version to a different location on your computer. All server links point to the new file(s), but your computer may not replace them properly if you choose the same download location.

  18. Here’s a short note of encouragement to anyone who has been hesitant to upgrade from Prose 1 to Prose 1.5. I invested less than an hour of my time and upgraded two of my websites to Prose 1.5. I followed the ‘Site Setup Kit’ instructions but skipped the following steps:

    – exporting my Prose design settings, because I already had a full backup
    – activating Twenty Eleven, because I briefly activated Genesis instead.

I didn’t encounter a single problem. :) My thanks to the StudioPress team for making my online life simple and stress free.

  19. Wow, Prose looks clean, simple, elegant and specially is fast loading.

  20. Wow. Nice Theme. Simple But Look Great.

  21. Hey Brian,

I have to say this is a FANTASTIC theme! Hope you guys can implement the width increase in ver. 2.0 thanks!

  22. I’ve spent the last figuring out which theme framework I wanted to buy (ever since the theme I purchased from a, ahem, competitor broke. Again. Am *so* not happy.)

Since them I’ve been all over your site, afraid of making another bad choice. But the more I read about you guys, the better I felt. And now I see that you’ve put the custom css outside of the Prose child theme? Yes! I’m sold. Consider me your newest customer!

  23. So, I added some code to Prose > Custom Setting via admin.php?page=prose-custom&settings and now my site won’t display at all. Where are the custom settings stored? I need to back out the code I added. Thanks.

  24. I like how menu and header part in general shows up in minimum child theme plus it has more clear fonts than the prose theme only last one has better results in mobile phones and tablets….
If only I could change prose header to be like minimum theme then I d be sold 😉

  25. Prose is the theme that I’m using, so I’m glad for the update!

  26. This new 1.5 update is fantastic!!! I do have two quick questions though.

    1) When viewed on a device such as the iPhone or Kindle Fire both my headline and videos in my posts are cut short, i.e. I can only view a portion of a video image.
Is there a way to resolve this and

    2) Is there a simple way to add the genesis grid to the new theme?

  27. I bought Genesis + Prose in December 2010. Now, I want to upgrade to Prose v1.5 but can not find the download link.
    Can you help me?

    • To access a new copy of the theme, please just use the link provided in your original download email.
