Best Template for eCommerce and best eCommerce plugin

.
I wrote to Brian.. and he suggested I post this question in the Support Forums... so here goes.

I'd like to convert my affiliate site to WordPress incorporating an eCommerce plugin.

What (Studio Press) themes have folks used successfully.. and what have you found to be the best eCommerce plugin?

Tom,

I don't think there is necessarily a "best" theme for this - all of them can work with an eCommerce solution. I would be tempted to choose one that is closest to the overall look and feel of your site.

As for a plugin, it's hard to ignore the popular WP-eCommerce (although this will cause conflicts with the Featured Content Gallery). I've been doing some work with eShop recently, which I found quite easy to use and which seemed to have the functionality I needed for that project. I guess you need to determine what features you need - stock monitoring, downloads, lots of payment methods etc... Or perhaps a simple paypal plugin would do the trick. You will probably have to spend a little time on a development server playing with a few of these plugins to see which one works best for you.

Probably not the complete answer you were looking for, but hopefully this gives you a few pointers.

Thanks Adew, I agree with you.. there probably is not a "best" template.. and I guess all would work fine in most instances.

Apparently though I did not make myself clear re the eCommerce. The client I am working with does not have his own storefront.. but rather he is an affiliate seller. All of the items appearing on his site are simply links back to a Linksys client (to a large extent drugstore.com).

Does that clear it up a bit?

Tom,

Presumably each affiliate sale is managed by the sellers' eCommerce systems, so does your client actually need an eCommerce solution? Or have I missed the point?

No, you have not missed the point...I am just not doing a good job of defining the issue. It's been a long day.

Actually, what I am doing is mixing two issues into one.

I have two clients... ONE of whom is an affiliate - and as you point out does not need an eCommerce solution. For that client we just need a template that will allow us to include several items that link back to the affiliate site (drugstore.com). So that was the part of my initial question that asked if there was a template that would be best for that.

Client TWO actually has his own inventory.. and for that he needs an eCommerce solution. As you pointed out earlier, almost any template will work for that.. but one that has the ability to show lots of items will be best.

I'm headed home for a beer (a BG Starbucks perhaps?) and to clear my head... LOL
