Old Theme Causing Issues?

A friend's site keeps going down and her webmaster said that it could because the the child theme, because it hasn't been updated since 2010. I never thought this could be an issue - is this correct? Can an older child theme keep bring down her site? Or can the issues be caused by something else?

That is not correct unless the host can provide error logs stating so.
