streamline and genesis

I have used streamline as my theme - am I supposed to upload genesis with this theme? I read somewhere that it needs to run with genesis. Tony

Yes you need to upload Genesis to your themes folder, activate. Then activate Streamline.

Then adjust your Genesis theme settings and then apply your widgets (found under appearance).

Hi Brian

Sorry to sound stupid. So, with my current theme which is the streamline one - you're saying I need to run with the genesis parent theme. I've downloaded the Genesis Parent Theme and ignored the Genesis Child Theme - is this correct? And downloaded the Streamline Child Theme.

Is the streamline child theme different to the streamline classic theme or are these the same? Can it run on it's own?

Cheers

Tony

Streamline Child theme needs Genesis to be installed in your wp-content/themes folder.

No, Streamline Classic and Streamline Child theme are not the same thing (though the demos look the same). Streamline Classic is a standalone theme which does not use Genesis.

Yes, you can ignore the Child theme supplied with Genesis.

So:

1. Install Genesis
2. Install Streamline Child theme
3. Activate Streamline Child theme

I'm about to activate the genesis theme and the streamline child theme. By activating these themes will I loose my current streamline classic customisations?

Cheers

Tony

You won't lose any customisations by deactivating a theme. If you delete a theme - that's another matter altogether.

Can you explain what is the advantage to changing to Genesis and using the streamline child theme. I'm trying to work out if it's something I have to do and if I stick with streamline classic what am I loosing/gaining? Does Genesis give me more options?

Is the Streamline classic no longer supported. Tony

I haven't worked on my site for a while until today and was unable to find the demo for the Classic Streamline Theme on the Studiopress site. The Streamline Theme now falls under the Genesis tab. In looking through the Genesis/Streamline Theme demo it does not show the following page templates...
Author, Full Wdith, Product or Video it only shows Archive and Blog. Does this mean that the Child Theme (Streamline) does not offer the other page templates? If the other page templates are offered in the Streamline Child Theme is there any advantage in making switch and using Genesis? Thanks in advance for any advice.

I'd love to know the answer to this, too, please.
Have popped back here, not having needed the forums for a while and I hadn't heard about the need to upgrade my Streamline to the Genesis.
Did I miss something?
Thanks
Clare :-)

You don't "need" to upgrade, but there are longer term advantages if you do.

Transitioning from Streamline "Classic" to Genesis/Streamline

After reading the ReadMe files in the Genesis Parent and Streamline Child theme folders, I'm a little confused on transitioning a site from the Streamline "Classic" (Blue) theme. I want the easiest/quickest transition possible, hopefully without having to first set up a test site.

What's the recommended way to apply the customizations in the following Streamline "Classic" files to the Genesis/Streamline theme?

404.php
blue.css
footer.php
header.php
sidebar_right.php
sidebar.php
index.php
comments.php

Thank you.

I just need to know if the question in my previous post in this thread was out of line in some way, or if it was simply overlooked. I don't want to be asking inappropriate support questions, but I'm honestly puzzled about moving one of my sites from the Streamline Classic theme to the Genesis/Streamline (Blue) theme.

Maybe I've overlooked some critical support information. If so, please direct me to it. I feel "in the dark" on this and would appreciate any pointers.

Thanks.

Simply overlooked, Deb. This can happen when adding a reply to an older thread.

Porting over an existing site to Genesis isn't a 5 minute job. All of the markup is different with Genesis which means you will have to re-do your CSS customisations. Some things will be easier, thanks to the custom widgets supplied with Genesis. Some things will be a little more difficult to get your head around at first, such as using hooks to modifiy certain things. The tutorials should help with this.

The big advantage in moving over to Genesis is (a) once you understand how it works, you will find it easy to use and (b) future upgrade path is protected.

Hope this helps.

No problem, adew. I'm relieved to know I didn't cross a line of becoming a "pest"!

It sounds like it would be a good idea for me to experiment locally. I understand just enough about the framework scenario that I can definitely see the long-term benefits to using it. So I'll just plan to slow down on this, go through the tutorial, and give more time to making the switch-over.

Thanks so much!
