They are using the Thesis framework, not Genesis. But you could achieve this using the Page Links To plugin and adding a photo gallery of images with their captions labeled the category name you will be linking too and then add that link to your specific blog categories. In other words, instead of the URL for the image when clicked - it would go to the URL of the category you select for that image.
