how do I add my own avatar but exclude that from others using it?

I want to add my own image as author on my Balance Theme blog

How do I do that?

I've uploaded an image of myself labelled avatar.jpg but haven't managed to get any further than that

WordPRess uses Gravatars to show user avatars. If you do not wish to sign up at gravatar.com you will need a plugin to have local avatars.
