Just an update, Charles that worked.

I viewed the source and then entering style classes for each and every single widget. It will make my stylesheet about 12 miles long but it works reasonably...

Nope, that didn't work. I am not sure if the widget code itself is incorrect (as in the widget text code is overwriting the stylesheet) or whether there are conflicting entries in the stylesheet...

It's not a sidebar that I am trying to create though.

It is a bar underneath the featured content gallery. If you look at the Magazine theme demo you will see that it has a spot for AdSense stuff...

Ok, so I was able to edit the THEME_OPTIONS file to add the widgety thing that allows you to decide if you want a 468 block to display on the page and what the code is etc.
