If you delete pages that have been indexed and someone visits that page they will receive a 404 error. Best thing to do is add redirects for all the pages that you delete.

There is no such thing as a readmore shortcode. There is the more tag: <!-- more --> which truncates post and page content when pulled elsewhere in the site....
