The resolution was basically a hand rebuild of the site. I was able to import the posts via the WP export/import feature. The media was quite troublesome to iron out. No cures found, just trouble....

The host uses MySQL client version: 5.0.67. I took the lines out anyway. Still doesn't work. Maybe I should have used version 5 filters when uploading the database.

Nope. Not working. My photo replaces the R when that particular post is selected, but on the front page the R still shows up. It appears that I misunderstood you, Joe. Back to the grind.

Okay, I think I'm catching on. You saved me from killing the calf to save a mouse, Joe. If I insert a photo in the post (even if it is not exactly 70x70) that photo will show up instead of the R....

Yes. I want only the post to appear. Any photos will be embedded in the post. Maybe I'm not seeing the big picture, but it would seem awfully cumbersome to have to come up with the right-sized photo...
