Default Is genesis the right choice for this site?
I have a crude mock-up of a site, and want to turn it into a responsive wordpress site. Is Genesis the right way to go ?

That could certainly be done in Genesis. It would require customization but then again I haven't seen that exact theme elsewhere so that is true for any theme you might use. Personally I prefer Genesis for any site that I do whether I'm using a turn key design or customizing it. I'm a bit biased though.
