how to best change child themes?

Default how to best change child themes?
I want to change to the Executive 2 child theme, but as it is so completely different from my current theme I first want to make all relevant changes.

Is there a way / plugin that I can use that shows the current site to my visitors till I made all necessary changes?

you might try the theme test drive plugin.
