I wasn't assuming laziness, which is sometimes a virtue in programming. Fear is the number one killer here.

Learn how to upload a stable version (of the file you are editing) via FTP. There are some files (like the functions.php theme file) which will result in a blank web site when you edit them wrong. The first time it happens it is really scary. After the first hundred times it's like rolling out of bed.

If something really bad happens, replace the file you were editing via FTP. It's also a good idea not to edit more than one file at as time. And to save stable file version locally just in case.
