I wish I could provide the code but I didn't fix it that way. I am not very technical and do not mess swith the html. All I did was change my selections in the MailChimp plugin (deselected the java script) and also changed the field selected in my Mailchimp form--instead of having a Groups field I used a standard field offered by the MailChimp form wizard.

What I did worked and may still help someone facing the same problem so I am very happy for you to post this to the General Discussion thread.
