As Craig mentioned, comments are linked to posts. That's why I suggested something like Wp-Wall. You could also try searching for alternative plugins (yes, a plugin is your best bet) onhttp://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/. If you want something that doesn't need a page refresh you will a plugin which uses Ajax.
